The newly accredited University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) is recruiting for a Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, to join the leadership team of Founding Dean Stephen J. Spann, M.D., M.B.A. The inaugural class of 30 students began July, 2020, and the second class of 30 will begin July, 2021. The third class will increase in size to 60 students. Construction on a dedicated building began in May, 2020 and should be complete by July 2022.

The curriculum of this community-based medical school has a strong focus on primary care; behavioral, community and population health; high value healthcare; social determinants of health; and partnering with communities with major health disparities to improve health and healthcare. The curriculum that has been developed and taught utilizes the best practices in medical education. At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

Biomedical Sciences in this context includes all non-clinical content areas such as anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, histology, developmental biology, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, neurosciences, and related disciplines.

The Biomedical Sciences Chair functions under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine and works in cooperation with appropriate University offices and within existing University policies, procedures, and practices.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Develop and promote a culture of servant leadership, while supporting the success of faculty in educational and research endeavors.
• Support the mission of the UHCOM, both within the University and the broader community.
• Recruit, develop, and retain departmental faculty.
• Serve as a role model for collaborative leadership.
• Promote scholarly activity and research by UHCOM faculty, students, and residents with outcomes of public dissemination of scholarship.
• Establish, oversee, and manage the annual departmental budget, financial activities, and resource allocations in a fiscally responsible manner.
• Advise the Dean on matters concerning faculty appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure (when available).
• Ensure faculty participation in the development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate medical education programs.
• Establish and integrate department goals and budget, including the management of faculty funded research.
• Collaborate with the UHCOM Associate Dean for Research in the development of policies and protocols designed to effectively support and manage the research mission of the school.
• Continue progress on established departmental strategic plans; update and implement as appropriate.
• Oversee, foster, and ensure the development, delivery, assessment and ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of the biomedical sciences curriculum.
• Collaborate with UHCOM leadership on the development and implementation of curriculum in accordance with student and faculty needs.
• Foster a positive culture among the students, staff and faculty of the UHCOM.
• Other related duties, as assigned.

Rank and salary commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Full-Time: 1 FTE

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., etc.)
• Established credentials and experience in a discipline within the biomedical sciences
• Documented success in medical education, research, leadership, and administration
• Strong collaborative and communication skills
• Strong commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning
• Experience with independent design, grant writing and conduct of research in relevant academic and/or clinical domains
• Strong management skills
• Excellent public speaking skills
• Excellent service skills relevant to supervisor, peers, direct reports, medical students, and faculty
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity
• Experience successfully managing departmental budget

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated senior level experience in the areas of research, medical education, teaching, and/or administration within an academic environment
• Experience with cross disciplinary training
• Experience with, or a strong knowledge of, current pedagogical approaches such as problem-based and/or team-based learning
• An established research program with external funding
