The Baker lab and its collaborators at Marquette University in Milwaukee WI are recruiting 1-2 ambitious, successful scientists with doctoral degrees in neuroscience or related fields. This is a multi-year opportunity to be funded by a recent NIH award. The primary objective of the funded research is to investigate how astrocytes contribute to the types of impaired behavioral regulation that are often present in human substance abuse and related disorders. Our current approaches utilize rodent models and complementary methods to investigate the functional importance of astrocytic glutamate release to the neural regulation of behavior. These efforts have led to the successful launching of a biotechnology company that is currently conducting clinical trials (Promentis Pharma). Our goal is that the successful applicant can broaden our approach by incorporating expertise and techniques from related fields including molecular or evolutionary biology, computational modeling, human cognition, human behavioral disorders, or medicinal chemistry. The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of these areas and have a strong desire to conduct rodent behavioral assays, HPLC, FACS, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, cell culture, western blotting, fiber photometry, electrophysiology, and confocal or two-photon microscopy. The successful candidate will also have an advanced understanding of statistical analyses and be proficient in authoring scientific manuscripts. Because we strive to create an intellectually rich and enjoyable research environment, we encourage applications from individuals seeking a diverse and inclusive workplace.  Applications can be submitted here, https://employment.marquette.edu/postings/14428. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
