Researcher Coastal Hazards- Assistant/Associate/Full

University of California San Diego

RESEARCH POSITION IN COASTAL HAZARDS
SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, U.C. SAN DIEGO

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites applications for a full-time Researcher position. Researchers at SIO receive 11-month appointments with 25% salary support from institutional sources but are expected to establish an externally funded research program that provides the remainder of their salary support. The Researcher series at SIO parallels the Professor series in terms of research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers at SIO often obtain educator appointments in the SIO Department and serve as graduate student advisors.

We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist with research expertise in coastal geomorphology and physical oceanography that concern coastal hazards, such as changes in coastal morphology (e.g., beaches and cliffs) induced by sea level rise, wave-driven runup and flooding, precipitation, and winds. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to generate substantial extramural funding and is expected to do research that is relevant locally, nationally, or internationally, and which ideally will have relevance to stakeholders (e.g., state and local governments and agencies). Expertise in novel observational or modeling approaches is desirable. The candidate is expected to develop a vigorous research group and provide intellectual leadership, while also taking advantage of SIO's exceptionally diverse scientific community. The position fits within but also bridges between existing research groups at SIO such as the Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation (CCCIA) and other new and existing areas in the Earth and Ocean/Atmospheres Sections.

We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research and service, and who are committed to building an equitable and diverse university environment. Candidates will be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Researcher levels. Rank and salary will be consistent with the applicant's qualifications, experience and University of California pay scales.

SIO is a world-renowned center of solid Earth, planetary, oceanographic, biological, and atmospheric research committed to academic excellence and diversity within its student body, staff, and approximately 200 principal investigators (https://diversity.ucsd.edu).

For full consideration, applications must be received by May 31, 2021.
