ROLE SUMMARY

The position of Scientist - Fermentation Process Development will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to improve Pfizer's production processes through biotransformation, biocatalysis and microbial culture improvement projects.

Principal duties include fermentation process development around existing and new processes being developed, screening of improved cultures and enzymes from the genetics teams, and tech transfer of the developed possesses into production plants.

The Bioprocess Development Group is a group of 24 highly engaged scientists that apply state of the art genetic, microbiological, engineering and analytical technology to support robust lowest cost production of small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) via enzymatic and fermentation processes.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Set up and run laboratory scale fermentations including process turnaround.
  • Perform process development around our industrial microorganisms including yeast, bacterial and fungal strains, including further optimization around new lead cultures.
  • Ensure proper documentation of results and effectively communication within the team.
  • Work closely with our molecular biology/genetics teams to ensure timely evaluation of new leads.
  • Work closely with fermentation pilot plant and production plant to ensure that the processes being developed meet the criteria for effective scale up into production.
  • Remain current with and champion the implementation of new technologies within the group to ensure we deliver or exceed project targets.


Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS in Microbiology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology with some laboratory / industrial experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with aseptic techniques. Preferably working with laboratory scale fermenters to perform fermentation process development and screening.
  • Ability to design experiments as well as to analyze, interpret, follow-up and communicate experimental data.
  • Strong initiative and good problem-solving skills. Takes personal responsibility for own work, pushing self and others to exceed goals and deliver results.
  • Demonstrated awareness of scientific literature and a desire to remain current in field of expertise, through study of scientific literature and attendance of scientific meetings.
  • Must have demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must be able to establish positive colleague relationships which foster collaboration and cooperation. Bioprocess Development Group (BDG) is a team-based organization. Good peer relationships are the only way to get projects done and to succeed.
  • Change agile - can effectively cope with change.


Nice-to-Have

  • Good knowledge of microbial fermentation process improvement in the areas of applied microbiology and biochemistry.
  • Knowledge and experience with Good Manufacturing Practices is desirable
