Tenure-Eligible Senior Investigator Chief
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized, and visionary scientist to lead the Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Genetics (LCBG) in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI). This position is part of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) world-class intramural research program (IRP) and equivalent to a tenured academic department chair.
The LCBG is an interactive unit of investigators dedicated to solving important problems in basic cancer biology and progression. LCBG investigators conduct an integrated research program consisting of basic and translational components that are designed to elucidate the cellular and molecular changes associated with specific stages of tumorigenesis with emphasis on metastasis, detection and characterization of genetic modifiers fundamental to cancer susceptibility and progression, defining the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of human cancer including the role of the immune system and the tumor microenvironment ultimately leading to the development of rational approaches for cancer prevention and treatment. Studies are performed using in vivo in animal models, in vitro in cell and organ cultures, and on tissues and cells obtained from human volunteers and cancer patients. The LCBG also develops and employs novel protocols for research in molecular diagnostics for human and animal tissues, noninvasive medical imaging for animal models, and preclinical cancer trials.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenured NIH Senior Investigator and will lead their own individual world-class research program, supported by generous stable resources, including access to a wide range of NCI technology platforms and interdisciplinary collaborations within NCI, as well as at NIH and its Clinical Center. In addition, the chief will provide scientific and administrative leadership to LCBG by defining the overall scientific strategy and direction and identifying new research opportunities, including through recruitment of junior and senior faculty and management of laboratory resources. The chief will also oversee mentoring and training activities and is responsible for ensuring an inclusive, diverse, collaborative, and healthy work environment.
The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is home to nearly 250 basic and clinical research groups located on two campuses just outside of Washington, D.C. CCR is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and makes up the largest component of the research effort at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Centrally supported by long-term funding and a culture of complete intellectual freedom, CCR scientists are able to pursue the most important and challenging problems in cancer research. We collaborate with academic and commercial partners and advocacy groups across the world in efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and HIV/AIDS. The successful candidate must have a M.D, Ph.D., or equivalent, an established record in the field of cancer research, demonstrated leadership ability, proven effectiveness in mentoring and must meet the criteria for NIH tenure. This position is located at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available.
