Job Details

The newly established laboratory of Clarissa Campbell at CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, is recruiting a highly motivated Technical Assistant to join an international team working in the field of immunology and metabolism. The lab is interested in investigating how changes in microbial and organismal metabolism contribute to regulate immune cell function. In your role as Technical Assistant you will be involved in setting up the laboratory, you will be responsible for the lab organization and you will contribute with your technical skills and research experience to the success of the Campbell research group.

Clarissa Campbell is looking for a dedicated Technical Assistant to help set-up an own independent research laboratory in an interdisciplinary and international research institute. After receiving the appropriate training, the new team member will independently carry out experiments using mouse models and cell culture-based techniques. In addition, the new group member will be a part of individual as well as group meetings to deepen the understanding of the scientific directions in the field of immunology and metabolomics.

Your profile

  • Degree in life sciences (BSc, MS., Mag, DI) or equivalent training (HBLVA Rosensteingasse, etc.)
  • Eager to join a young team and be trained in new techniques and science of mucosal immunology
  • Qualified laboratory experience in molecular and cellular biology and/or immunology
  • Experience with cell culture and/or mouse handling is a plus
  • Experience with basic molecular biology (e.g. PCR)
  • Experience with microbiology (plating and growing bacteria) desired
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English High accuracy and reliability, able to work seamlessly in a team
  • Excellent communication skills and organizational skills

Your tasks

  • Laboratory organization, ordering of laboratory consumables
  • Molecular biology, such as cloning or preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries
  • Cell Isolation and cell sorting of primary immune cells from different tissues (mouse, human)
  • Immune cell functional assays, such as T cell activation/polarization
  • Phenotyping of immune cells using multicolor flow cytometry
  • Running ELISAs, Luminex and other enzymatic assays
  • Mouse models, gnotobiotic husbandry

The Laboratory

The goal of the laboratory Clarissa Campbell is to understand how immunity and metabolism are integrated at the organismal level. Adaptive lymphocytes of higher vertebrates play an essential
role in immunity and perform extensive accessory functions that contribute to tissue homeostasis. Although the fundamental operative principles of immune cells are well characterized, many functional mechanisms still lack contextualization in physiological settings and therefore fail to yield novel concepts and therapeutic avenues. The team will be investigating how metabolic cues affect the differentiation and function of T cells. The studies focus on the intestinal mucosa, where T cells are exposed to a myriad of microbial metabolites and dietary nutrients. They also want to understand how changes in organismal metabolism that occur as a consequence of gastrointestinal infections impact immune responses. The group will be using gnotobiotic husbandry, engineered bacterial strains, metabolomics and experimental infection to identify novel mechanisms contributing to the regulation of T cell function in physiological settings. https://cemm.at/research/groups/clarissa-campbell-group/
