A scientist with strong managerial, communications and interpersonal skills, and experience in integrative physiology relevant to diabetes, is sought for the position of Program Director for Integrative Physiology in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD) in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), at the National Institutes of Health. Research to be managed by the Director of DDEMD’s Integrative Physiology program is supported through multiple mechanisms, including regular research grants and cooperative agreements. Activities to be pursued include planning, establishing, and overseeing a wide range of goal-directed initiatives to expedite and enhance translational, pre-clinical and clinical research in diabetes.

Examples of topics supported by NIDDK that could be overseen by the Program Director for Integrative Physiology include:  

  • Physiology of counter-regulatory responses to hypoglycemia and the pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia unawareness
  • Physiological mechanisms involved in the regulation of peripheral metabolism (e.g., carbohydrate and lipid metabolism within the liver) and their subsequent effects on systemic physiology including the contribution of hepatic metabolism to obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes
  • Autonomic nervous system regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism
  • Effects of circadian pathways and sleep on metabolic disease
  • Basic animal and clinical studies investigating the effects of metabolic surgery on diabetes and diabetes related outcomes

The Director of the Integrative Physiology program in DDEMD will work closely with the Division Director to enhance research activity by identifying opportunities for enabling translational and clinical research in diabetes, with particular emphasis on research focused on human physiology and metabolism. He or she will assess research needs, identify emerging technologies, develop initiatives, help to assess scientific priorities, advise potential applicants of resource opportunities, and administer grants and awards. The applicant must have a professional scientific degree (Ph.D. or M.D.), scientific management experience, and strong interpersonal and written communication skills. In addition to specific expertise related to human diabetes, the applicant must have a strong background in human endocrine physiology. Familiarity with contemporary topics related to involvement of the autonomic nervous system in diabetes pathogenesis, including research in hypoglycemia unawareness is a plus. The position is located in Bethesda, Maryland. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience of the applicant.
