The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (UK CAER) is seeking to fill a Senior Scientist position for its Biofuels & Environmental Catalysis research group. The successful candidate will lead CAER’s research program in microalgae-based CO2 capture and utilization. CAER’s algae program was initiated in 2008 and is currently focused on the cultivation of microalgae using CO2 present in industrial flue gas, as well as in ambient air, in addition to the processing of produced algae biomass into products such as bioplastic feedstock and high value chemicals. The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) supervise the cultivation of microalgae at various scales; 2) oversee (and assist where necessary) the analysis of algae cultures and produced biomass using diverse analytical methods; 3) supervise and assist in the processing of produced biomass; 4) prepare progress reports for project sponsors; 5) lead project planning meetings; 6) provide training to other personnel and students; 7) prepare research proposals; 8) prepare scientific manuscripts; 9) present project results at scientific conferences.

Minimum qualification is PhD. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of ‒ and experience in ‒ algal biology. Experience in genomics is also desirable. Excellent communication skills (oral and written) are required. The preferred experience of the successful candidate shall have a minimum of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university in phycology, biology, biosystems engineering or a related field + 0-5 years of experience, or the equivalent in education, experience and training.
