Senior / Principal Outsourcing Manager, Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry

Description
The Discovery Chemistry department at Genentech is looking for a highly motivated and talented organic chemist/medicinal chemist to lead our CRO operations and collaborations. We engage with high quality external CRO partners around the world and have more than 300 external chemists and numerous fee for service synthetic chemistry initiatives to support our internal portfolio projects. Discovery chemistry relies on outsourcing to provide high quality synthetic and medicinal chemistry to support not only medicinal chemistry portfolio projects, but also to enrich internal compound libraries (HTS and DELT libraries) and bolster technology platforms, which include a diversity of molecular modalities.
This position requires excellent strategic planning, visionary thinking, operational excellence, and strong project management skills to ensure scientific and operational excellence in the collaboration between Genentech and its external collaborations. This individual will work closely with medicinal chemists and other colleagues in Discovery Chemistry to drive external chemistry collaboration. Additionally, this individual will work closely with the Head of Small Molecule Outsourcing and other outsourcing managers within Small Molecule Drug Discovery (SMDD) to support our extensive worldwide CRO partnerships.  This position requires the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams (procurement, legal, finance, etc), and by doing so, this individual will have the opportunity to make major contributions to our entire small molecule portfolio.

Who You Are

  • Develop long term vision and strategies for our outsourcing that will support Discovery Chemistry department portfolio needs and capitalize external resources and technology
  • Implement and execute the outsourcing strategies including risk-mitigation plans
  • Build strong external CRO and collaboration networks to meet our business objectives
  • Develop scientific talent and novel technology at CROs, thereby enhancing CROs’ scientific capabilities to enable our portfolio needs
  • Manage scientific performance of external CRO partners and synthetic chemistry projects at CROs
  • Act as Scientific lead on multiple outsourcing projects including synthetic chemistry troubleshooting
  • Manage external partner relationship
  • Serves as a key contact to project teams or functions for outsourcing activities
  • Facilitates regular communication between project teams and external partners
  • Develop ideas to improve operational efficiency
  • Manage budget, contract and resource allocation

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in organic chemistry or related discipline with at least 2 years of post-graduate synthetic/medicinal chemistry experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in synthetic organic chemistry including the ability to demonstrate examples of solving complex synthetic challenges, analytical knowledge and overall excellent technical judgment.
  • Ability to devise and execute long-term strategic plans that balance the dynamics of internal infrastructure needs with external capabilities while managing day to day operational tasks.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to establish and maintain close and effective working relationships with internal stakeholders in Discovery Chemistry and SMDD, cross-functional and cross-cultural teams and external service suppliers (CROs).
  • Experience which demonstrates the ability to lead individuals and multidisciplinary groups/team members
  • Be self-motivated, proactive and excited to make an impact on small molecule drug discovery programs.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills are critical with a great attentiveness to detail, accuracy, and timelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in managing synthetic chemistry outsourcing activities and competency in project management
  • Adept negotiation skills with keen ability to identify opportunities and implement desirable solutions to both strategic and operational challenges
