Research Associate (Vacancy No 053768)

Bioinformatician / Computational Biologist (Vacancy No 053607)

The Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, MRC University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is seeking an experienced researcher and a bioinformatician to work on a collaborative programme funded by the Scottish Government to support COVID-19 genomic surveillance. The CVR has expanded its research programmes in viral genomics and transcriptomics, and its in-house sequencing facility has been upgraded to include state-of-the-art Illumina and Oxford Nanopore next-generation sequencing platforms, and automation equipment.

The Research Associate will lead the viral genomics aspect of the programme at the CVR and collaborate closely with other teams in the institute and with other agencies, including Public Health Scotland and the NHS Edinburgh and Glasgow Specialist Virology labs, aiming to efficiently run a high-throughput sequencing workflow to support surveillance of COVID-19 in Scotland.

The Bioinformatics role will be based in the CVR Bioinformatics group working closely with CVR Genomics and Prof Emma Thomson’s clinical team, and link to other agencies to support the assembly and analysis of data generated for SARS-CoV-2 sequencing across Scotland in order to generate regular reports for the Scottish and UK Governments on new variants and vaccine efficacy.

The CVR is a unique international research centre with a critical mass of researchers entirely dedicated to the study of viral diseases. The CVR’s collegiate and collaborative environment fosters a broad research portfolio. Research at the CVR spans molecular, structural and cellular levels through to the individual host and affected population, integrating molecular and structural virology, cell biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology and mathematical modelling, virus genomics and bioinformatics.

These positions are funded on a full-time basis until 31 March 2022.  Appointment will be made at Grade 7 for the Research Associate post and either Grade 6/7 for the Bioinformatics post (Grade 6 £29,176 - £32,817 / Grade 7 £35,845 - £40,322 per annum).

Interested applicants should apply online at https://www.gla.ac.uk/explore/jobs/ and seek the relevant Reference Numbers noted above. For enquiries regarding the Research Associate post, please contact Dr Ana da Silva Filipe via email ana.dasilvafilpe@glasgow.ac.uk and for the Bioinformatics post enquiries should be directed to Prof Emma Thomson via email emma.thomson@glasgow.ac.uk or Prof David L Robertson david.l.robertson@glasgow.ac.uk.
