ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer's BioMedicine Design (BMD) department in Cambridge, MA is responsible for discovering and developing biotherapeutic drug candidates. The High Throughput (HTP) Protein Expression and Purification Group in BMD is an integral part of the early discovery

process and is responsible for producing thousands of transiently-expressed and purified antibodies and antibody-like proteins across the early portfolio of projects.

The HTP group is currently looking for a laboratory technician to provide DNA production and cell culture support for the protein expression and purification activities in BMD. Using automated liquid handling equipment, the successful candidate will grow and maintain small-scale bacterial cultures and purify and normalize DNA for mammalian cell transfections, and maintain a cataloged inventory of routinely used DNA. Additionally, the candidate will grow and maintain mammalian cells using aseptic technique. The candidate will join a team of scientists responsible for transient protein expression and purification of hundreds of proteins each week.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for small scale DNA production activities, including automated DNA purification, quantitation, and normalization. The candidate will also help in passaging and maintaining mammalian cells required for transient transfections. The candidate will help manage DNA inventories and will be expected to assist with protein production request, which includes interfacing with other scientists in the department.

The successful candidate will have the ability to maintain an organized and clean laboratory space, maintain a rotating stock of supplies, communicate clearly on daily work, compile results in an organized lab notebook/online database, and consistently perform specific protocols. The candidate must be able to work closely with a team and communicate effectively to meet schedules and deadlines.

Education:
  • B.Sc in biological/life sciences or Associates/ Certificate in Biotechnology, or High School diploma with at least 2 years of relevant laboratory research experience


Qualifications
  • Previous microbiology experience
  • Previous experience working with DNA purification
  • Previous mammalian cell culture experience preferred
  • Must have good practical skills in a laboratory setting such as keeping an organized laboratory notebook and maintaining laboratory cleanliness to minimize contamination
  • Must be able to multitask
  • Must be able to follow detailed protocols
  • Must have ability to concentrate while doing repetitive tasks
  • Must be able to read thoroughly and understand weekly schedules
