Position Summary
Develops an independent, NIH-funded research program in the field of solid tumors, leads a group of postdoctoral scientists, provides mentorship and scientific guidance, oversees experimental studies in his/her laboratory, publishes high-quality research manuscripts, develops research grant proposals for consideration by NIH and other peer-reviewed funding agencies. Performs original research in the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics. Also performs all technical aspects of the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics. Evaluates and introduces new materials, methods and equipment to help determine the feasibility and or adaptability for the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics. Assists the Department Chair in development of new technologies, participation in quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement procedures. Supervises and mentors junior scientists and technical Associates in technical aspects of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Research: Developing cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. Perform original research including, but not limited to, the development of novel and innovative technologies for cancer diagnostics, liquid biopsy assays and platforms, discovery of novel therapeutic targets and development of anti-cancer therapeutics (e.g. small molecule inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies etc.), use of innovative approaches for more effective delivery of cancer therapeutics in solid cancers, and developing a program on genetic and epigenetic landscapes in cancer.
    • Read and analyze the relevant literature.
    • Develop cutting-edge methodologies in noninvasive, liquid biopsy assays for early diagnostics, including the analysis of circulating cell-free RNA and DNA.
    • Utilize high-throughput screening approaches and identify novel cancer therapeutic targets.
    • Perform cutting-edge research to engineer and develop anti-cancer therapeutics, including small molecule inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, and other innovative tools.
    • Contribute new ideas, actively engage in scientific discussion, provide expertise to inform discussion of new concepts.
    • Contribute to lab meetings and research Clubs.
    • Contributing to a positive lab environment including the spirit of collaboration and helping others.
    • Supervision of post-doctoral fellows and technologists as relevant for research activities.
    • Develop and maintain world expertise in the broader vision in the field of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics.
    • Write original scientific manuscripts.
    • Review scientific manuscripts and grant applications
    • Contribute and assist in grant applications.
    • Pathway to scientific independence: Develop concepts for own grant application with support from Department Chair.
    • Contribute to quality controls, verification of scientific results, rigor and robustness of scientific data by mentoring junior members of the Department.
    • Contribute to good record keeping, archiving of primary research data, assist with implementation of digital laboratory note books that can be shared among all members of the group, contribute to building and maintenance of a shared file server structure.
    • Act as role model and contribute to good experimental practice, SOPs, laboratory safety and animal welfare.
    • Participate in teaching activities of the Department and the Graduate School.
    • Attend scientific conferences and present work of the group.
    • Develops an independent, NIH-funded research program in the field of solid malignancies.
  • Leads a group of postdoctoral scientists, provides mentorship and scientific guidance, oversees experimental studies in his/her laboratory.
  • Publishes high-quality research manuscripts, develops multiple research grant proposals for consideration by NIH and other peer-reviewed funding agencies.
  • Collaborates with department personnel on research projects. Attends departmental meetings as required and participates in the department continuing education program.
  • Gives presentations of collaborative and methodological research at professional meetings and at invited seminars.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending service meetings, and workshops. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure, and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.


Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • MD degree and/or Ph.D. degree in Biology or related field of science
  • Five years in Molecular or Cell Biology
  • Demonstrated ability to direct a research team

Preferred education experience and skills :
  • Molecular and cell biology, solid cancers including gastrointestinal cancers, cancer biology
