The USDA, ARS, Mycotoxin Prevention and Applied Microbiology (MPM) Research Unit,

National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR), Peoria, Illinois is seeking an Interdisciplinary Research Chemist/ Biologist. MPM scientists conduct interdisciplinary research in chemistry, microbiology, genetics, and plant biology to produce information and technologies needed to enhance food safety and crop production in the U.S. and around the world. The incumbent will conduct research and publishes peer reviewed journal articles focused on optimizing sampling methods to accurately predict and determine mycotoxin contamination levels of grain. The goal of this research is to develop and transfer solutions to reduce mycotoxin contamination of food in response to stakeholder needs. The research supports Agricultural Research Service (ARS) National Program 108–Food Safety.

The specific objectives of the incumbent’s research include: (1) Determine effects of crop and storage conditions on toxin levels. (2) Develop pre-harvest sampling plans with emphasis on emerging toxins and remote sensing. (3) Develop post-harvest sampling plans for modern grain handling, storage, transportation and processing. A combination of analytical chemistry, statistics, modeling, food science, and agronomic approaches will be used to accomplish these objectives.
