ROLE SUMMARY

The Cancer Immunology Discovery (CID) group in La Jolla, CA is focused on the generation of large molecule immunotherapeutics that promote anti-tumor activity or counter immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment. Protein engineering efforts are supported by a world class antibody generation program, and a commitment to effective biotherapeutic design that stresses both ingenuity and simplicity. Our team takes a holistic approach to understanding the interplay of tumor, stromal, and immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, striving to define the axes of intercellular communication that could be leveraged to generate novel therapeutics.

We are seeking a qualified candidate to join us at a Principal Scientist level to contribute to protein engineering activities for the identification of novel biotherapeutics.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works closely with individuals in both protein engineering and immunology/oncology groups to innovate and develop the next-generation of protein therapeutics for immunotherapy
  • Carries out hands-on lab work to apply molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysical and crystallographictechniques to characterize novel protein therapeutics that target the immune system.
  • Obtains in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic targets of interest.
  • Participate and/or lead collaborations with internal and external collaborators.
  • Independently generates high quality laboratory-based investigative data to support project progression and clinical indications.
  • Supervise, mentors and cross-trains other scientists within Immunotherapeutic Design group.
  • Communicates experimental findings accurately and concisely in both oral and written formats.
  • Present at group meetings, global project team meetings, and site meetings.
  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D., post-doc plus 4 years' relevant experience, preferably in drug development in the industry
  • Degree in the field of Biological Science (protein biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology) or a related field (Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Biological Engineering).
  • Ability to independently design, plan and execute and interpret experiments.
  • Solid technical knowledge and hands-on experience with molecular biology, protein biochemistry, protein biophysics and protein crystallography.
  • Ability to manage an independent research program with no supervision.
  • Ability to organize and communicate complex data sets in a clear and concise manner to key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong track record of scientific accomplishments demonstrated through publications in highly regarded journals and/or intellectual property generation.
  • Track record of demonstrating analytical skills, creativity and unique problem-solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of the biotherapeutics (antibody and antibody-like scaffold) development process.
  • Outstanding pro-active attitude, interpersonal, collaborative, organization, planning and oral communication skills.
  • Strong motivation, passion and commitment to science and engineering novel entities.
  • Technical expertise should include strong protein biochemistry and molecular biology knowledge: cloning, expression and purification of proteins, protein characterization, protein-protein interactions (SPR, BLI), protein crystallography.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience in working with immune system derived proteins like antibody, TCR, cytokine, and antibody-like scaffold proteins is preferred.
  • Knowledge of translational work involving antibody and protein therapeutics in immunology and oncology would be of significant advantage.
  • Experience in mentoring and/or leading Ph.D. level and non-Ph.D. level scientists.
