Are you looking for biology role that allows you to grow professionally and contribute to the development of best-in-class medicines? If so, this role could be an exciting opportunity to explore.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and skilled biologist to join our Oncology Discovery Technologies (ODT), group within, Genome Biology, Functional Genomics (FxG) department at our US R&D Hub Site. The mission of our group is to unlock the genetic clues underlying human disease, thereby delivering new and better medicines for individuals with serious and greatest unmet medical need. To this end, we leverage the power of CRISPR and other gene editing technologies in high-throughput screening approaches, applied to in vitro and in vivo preclinical models, for the discovery and validation of novel disease targets or genetic variants, understanding mechanisms of drug action and resistance, and identifying potential combination therapies. Together with the ability to draw on genotypic and phenotypic databases from our world-leading partnerships with the UK BioBank and 23andMe, and to interrogate the genome through internal and collaborative efforts with the Altius Institute, Open Targets, and the Laboratory of Genomics Research (LGR), we aim to redefine how the industry approaches drug discovery.

The successful candidate will be part of a team exploring and applying advanced gene editing technologies for target discovery, disease model validation and biomarker discovery. We are looking for a scientist with broad experience in molecular and cellular biology including experience in gene editing technologies, oncology and complex cellular models.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Your primary focus will be in the laboratory, with a deep desire to be involved in driving drug discovery projects. You will be expected to perform laboratory experiments, data analysis, record keeping and reporting of results to agreed timelines, and give presentations at both internal and external meetings.
  • You will demonstrate the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and will display excellent interpersonal and communication skills, interacting with scientists and external collaborators at all levels.
  • For this position, you will be expected to maintain knowledge of current scientific literature relevant to the role.
  • A proactive attitude, excellent organizational skills and good record keeping are essential.
  • Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, standards and training, and safety training and practices.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MS or equivalent in biotechnology (non-PhD), molecular and cellular biology or a related discipline
  • Broad experience and in-depth knowledge in advanced molecular biology techniques including CRISPR gene editing at single gene or screening level
  • Proven experience in oncology research
  • Build understanding of the early drug discovery process, including practical experience in target identification and validation
  • Develop genome editing and screening skills, particularly with tumor, primary and immune cell types
  • Experience in using software applications in complex data analysis and interpretation
  • Demonstrated ability to design experiments, solve problems independently, troubleshoot protocols and implement omics studies
  • Sound knowledge of molecular biology
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; demonstrated ability working in a matrix team
  • Ability to generate scientific reports and present data to senior stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with hi throughput pooled CRISPR screening at a scale
  • Experience in the application of molecular analytical techniques (e.g., PCR, western blotting, NGS sequencing)
  • Must have 1-2 years of working experience preferably in pharma/biotech settings
  • Knowledge and practical experience in cell biology and assay development, e.g. high content imaging, flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with a variety of cell-based assays to assess cell state eg. Cell viability, drug EC50 calculations, MOI titration, viral transduction and bio sensors.
