GlaxoSmithKline has an immediate opening for an Investigator in protein higher order structure and biophysical characterization at our Collegeville, PA site.

The Mass Spectrometry & Characterization group is responsible for the characterization of therapeutic proteins in clinical development using a wide array of analytical techniques including FTIR, CD, DSC, SEC-MALS, AUC, and mass spectrometry, as well as particles and aggregates characterization by MFI, FlowCam, Archimedes, and HOUND. Our group supports the development of innovative and quality medicines for patients through cutting-edge analytical science.

This position will be in the Mass Spectrometry and Characterization group within the Structure and Function Characterization department. The department supports extended characterization and comparability studies for therapeutic proteins in clinical development. The responsibilities of the candidate will include the following: 1) develop and implement analytical technologies for characterization of therapeutic protein higher order structure, 2) design and execute forced degradation studies including protocol drafting, sample preparation, coordination of sample testing, and data interpretation, 3) provide quality data for input into regulatory submissions, and 4) represent the line function on project teams and sub-teams.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD in protein biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, pharmaceutical sciences or related field with 1-3 years of experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Hands-on experience in protein structure characterization using technologies such as FTIR, CD, DSC, SEC-MALS, AUC, and DLS.
  • Experience with data collection, processing, and interpretation with these techniques is a plus.
  • Experience working with protein higher order structure analysis such as secondary and tertiary structure, protein folding and unfolding, protein aggregation.
  • Experience with protein degradation under forced degradation conditions including oxidation, deamidation, and aggregation.


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Working knowledge of particles characterization such as characterization of protein aggregates and other inherent particles, as well as characterization of other intrinsic and extrinsic particulates with technologies such as MFI, FlowCam, and HOUND.
  • Some familiarity with of protein characterization by mass spectrometry and protein functional assays including SPR and cell-based assays.
  • Experience designing and executing forced degradation studies of therapeutic proteins and developing strategies to establish structure-function relationships.
  • A self-motivated, collaborative attitude with experience leading or participating in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential as well as good interpersonal behaviors.
