The primary purpose of the Laboratory Manager is to plan and implement all activities within a laboratory. Maintains quality and timeliness of all laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines. Manages workflow, administrative issues, operations and strategic planning. Ensures appropriate lab compliance with accrediting agency regulations. Plans, manages and controls laboratory budget. Manages staffing for laboratory, including planning, hiring, firing, salary administration, counseling and development. Defines and develops reports according to laboratory needs. Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve overall laboratory operational issues and interacts with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems. Ensures laboratory adherence to safety standards, especially in the use of hazardous chemicals. Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls. Impacts operations and ensures regulatory guidelines are met.

Key Functions
  • Oversees lab PDX core operation including managing direct report, performing quality control tests on PDX samples, record keeping and inventory updating
  • Manages collaborations and serves as a point of contact with internal and external collaborators
    • Drafts, submits and tracks lab MTAs
    • Attends scientific meetings with collaborators to ensure appropriate project management and execution of the collaboration; communicates progress to collaborators as needed
    • Coordinates all sample transfers, maintains and provides necessary support to collaborators including training sessions
  • Prepares progress reports for ongoing projects, coordinates budgets for grant applications and oversees laboratory spending. Assists PIs and trainees with grant applictions.
  • Responsible for IRB and IBC protocol maintenance
    • Serves as IRB manager and point-of-contact for administrative maintenance
    • Prepares and updates protocol documentation for renewal and/or annual continuing review
  • Acts as an EHS officer, and ensures the lab is in compliance
    • Ensures the laboratory practice is in compliance
    • Provides safety training to new trainees and staff members
    • Receives and disseminates inspection reports and results. Takes corrective actions as needed
  • Other management tasks
    • Actively reviews lab functions to ensure seamless operation
    • Resolves all the equipment issues
    • Does all ordering and follow-up for the lab
    • Handles all the administrative onboarding requirements for new lab members
    • Acts as laboratory representative at monthly departmental lab meetings. Communicates information from meetings with PI and lab members as needed
    • Attends lab scientific meetings to ensure continuity of projects and assist with project management tasks
    • Maintains and updates lab website
    • Updates PIs FIS
    • Schedules all lab meetings


Education
Required:
Bachelor's degree in one of the basic sciences or related field.

Preferred: Masters or PhD in one of the basic sciences or related fields

Experience
Required
: Seven years experience in laboratory operations to include two years in a supervisory capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Preferred: Previous supervisory role in a basic or translational laboratory
