The Computer Science department at the University of Southern Maine (usm.maine.edu/cos) invites applicants for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. We welcome applicants in all areas of specialization, but especially encourage candidates with research interests in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Systems, or Software Engineering to apply. Teaching responsibilities typically include core computer science courses and advanced courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise.

Information science has been identified as a key area for growth by the Maine government and the university is investing in research and instruction to meet the need.  The new faculty member will be part of a strong undergraduate Computer Science program and help with the current resumption of the MS in Computer Science degree.

The Computer Science department is part of the College of Science, Technology, and Health (CSTH), which has many departments in the bench, statistical, and theoretical sciences, and in engineering and health.  The variety of programs provides a solid platform for interdisciplinary scientific collaborations to build nationally and internationally recognized research groups, which the College and University administration support.

The successful candidate will join a department and institution that care deeply about student academic success and the development of faculty to be effective teachers.  The department meets annually to discuss teaching effectiveness and student learning and mentors junior faculty on practices. The university provides a variety of programs and financial support for faculty to improve their pedagogical skills.

Criteria for tenure include scholarship publishable in scientific, peer-reviewed outlets.  It is highly desirable to engage students in research projects and activities.  The university provides incentives and assistance for the preparation of grant applications and article submissions.
