The Protein Expression, Purification and Characterization group in the Preclinical Department of GSK Vaccines (Rockville, Maryland), is responsible for production, purification, characterization and analysis of candidate vaccine antigens and antibodies. This group plays an essential role in supporting preclinical, development and life-cycle management projects at GSK Vaccines.

We are looking for a highly motivated leader, with a proven track record in the most relevant areas of molecular biology, cell culture, protein expression, protein biochemistry, and biophysical characterization, in order to provide expertise in vaccine development for GSK projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage team of 5-10 scientists focused on protein expression, purification and characterization, generate data in support of vaccine R&D.
  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership with an enterprise mindset, ensuring support to professional development and qualification of staff.
  • Ensure team uses cutting edge technologies to deliver expertise to diverse GSK vaccine projects in discovery, development, and life cycle management.
  • Ensure objectives of team are aligned with R&D and business priorities and team activities are designed and delivered according to project needs.
  • Ensure team delivers assigned activities in the most efficient and resource conscious manner; drive innovation in new technology to enhance data quality.
  • Demonstrate strong scientific leadership to enable collaborations with key scientific internal and external stakeholders.
  • Publish data in peer reviewed journals, contribute to IP or regulatory filings
  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as needed.
  • Accountable for laboratory management monitoring and strong EHS&S culture
  • Accountable for team data integrity and quality expectations.


Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD degree in life sciences (or MSc/BSc and corresponding experience) plus at least 5 years of experience in related biotechnology field.
  • Experience in fields of molecular biology, protein production, protein purification, protein characterization, and analysis.
  • Experience in high-throughput candidate screening methods, lab automation
  • Experience in managing scientists and forging collaborations in a matrix.
  • Track-record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Track-record of scientific presentations at external and internal conferences; fluency in English, spoken and written.


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Highly skilled in protein biochemistry and biophysics, including experience with DSF, DSC, DLS, AUC, SEC-MALLS, SPR, BLI, ITC.
  • Experienced with structural biology methods (NMR, X-ray, SAXS, cryoEM)
  • Experienced with structure-based antigen design of vaccine antigens, including emerging computational methods
  • Experienced in leading, managing, mentoring, training scientists


To be successful in the role, this person must:
  • Demonstrate a detailed fundamental knowledge protein expression, purification and characterization, and their applications in vaccine research.
  • Have practical knowledge in protein expression, purification and characterization
  • Have the ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data and determine next steps
  • Be comfortable conversing with opinion leaders regarding technical information
  • Be comfortable managing direct reports operating in a matrix environment.
  • Possess a good balance of creativity and analytical thinking faculties
  • Lead team to accomplish company objectives whilst also fostering the individual professional growth and development of direct reports
  • Display an ability to be productive and successful in an intense work environment as a team player
  • Demonstrate the agility and ability to learn new methods and ways of working in order to thrive in rapidly-evolving industry
