Assistant Professor Position in Molecular Mechanisms of Microbe-Host Interactions
The Department of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level utilizing molecular, genetic and/or biochemical approaches to study the molecular mechanism of interactions between microbes and plants, animals (including arthropods) and/or microbiomes. Minimum requirement is a PhD. Preferred two years postdoctoral experience, including academic, research, government and industry settings. The successful candidate is expected to establish an innovative, externally funded research program and contribute to the departmental teaching mission at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with specific emphasis in molecular microbial genetics. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- The use of molecular and/or genetic techniques to characterize processes that influence microbial interactions, ranging from mutualism to pathogenesis
- Biochemical approaches to investigate protein, carbohydrate and/or lipid-mediated interactions between microbes and their hosts
- Use of emerging or non-model laboratory systems to study the host-microbe-environment nexus
- Characterization of host-symbiont interactions, niche specialization, and response to environmental change
- Elucidation of the evolution of mechanisms underlying host-microbe interactions
Our faculty (http://micro.utk.edu/) have broad interests in microbial pathogenesis and microbial ecology. Our labs work with archaeal, bacterial, fungal, protozoan, and viral models in diverse hosts and environments. Candidates with experimental approaches that complement or strengthen any of these areas will be given full consideration. Our department has strong interdisciplinary ties to engineering, chemistry, veterinary science, and mathematics, as well as the UT Institute of Agriculture (UTIA), Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), and the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
