AASHTO re:source is seeking individuals for the position of Laboratory Assessor. Veterans are encouraged to apply and will be strongly considered. AASHTO re:source staff are renowned for their technical knowledge and desire to provide support to the scientific community that we serve. AASHTO provides extensive training for this position, and previous experience in CMT is not required.   Currently all travel for AASHTO’s Laboratory Assessors has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessments are being conducted remotely using web conferencing software until it is safe to resume travel. More information on remote assessments and our response to the COVID-19 pandemic can be found on our website. The health and safety of our employees remains our top priority.   A person who is successful as a Laboratory Assessor typically has the following traits:

Previous experience as an auditor or in quality management is desirable, but not required.   About the Position: Laboratory Assessors are subject-matter experts (SMEs) that perform independent on-site assessments of construction materials testing (CMT) laboratories. During an on-site assessment, assessors evaluate of the technical capabilities of testing facilities and audit quality management systems for compliance to national standards. Laboratory Assessors travel independently approximately 150 days per year in 2-3 week long periods, performing assessments in all fifty states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Canada, and beyond. During these trips, assessors audit the laboratories’ policies, testing procedures, as well as equipment and personnel records. This is a full-time position that places a strong emphasis on working independently. When not traveling, Laboratory Assessors perform pre-and post-audit activities, serve as technical experts to staff and customers, assist with internal and external training activities, and assist in the management and administration of the program.

 

Requirements: A four-year degree in science (geology, environmental, etc.) or engineering (civil, mechanical, industrial, materials, or environmental) is required. Prior experience as an auditor or in a field related to quality management are strongly desired and will be considered in lieu of a science or engineering degree. All new hires are enrolled in a rigorous six-month training program upon hire that focuses on auditing skills and technical training. Veterans are strongly desired for this role and will be given special consideration.   Interested candidates must be able to travel independently approximately 150 days per year. A valid driver’s license from any state, a sound driving record, and the ability to drive up to 400 miles per day on occasion are also required for the position. Laboratory Assessors are expected to live within a reasonable commuting distance of Frederick, Maryland. Located at the intersection of I-70 and I-270, Frederick, Maryland is approximately one hour from both Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. Upon hire, new employees must complete a rigorous six-month training program.
