PROFESSORSHIP (W3) FOR EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY OF PLANTS AND HEAD OF THE BOTANICAL GARDEN

The successful candidate is expected to teach and conduct research in the field of evolutionary biology of plants and be head of the Botanical Garden.
We further expect the successful candidate to take part in the core research area Climate, Earth and Environment.
The successful candidate’s research should focus on the evolution of seed-bearing plants and include population genetic or population genomic analyses as well as light microscopic, electron microscopic, and biochemical methods. This research can be supplemented with studies on taxa distribution. Analyses of the interaction between climate conditions and the evolution of seed-bearing plants as well as on the role of hybridization for evolution are desired. The aim is to participate in the Department of Biology’s joint initiatives that focus on biota in the climate system and hybridization. The successful candidate is expected to develop collaborative projects with nonuniversity institutions—like the Leibniz institute currently being established for the analysis of the evolution of biodiversity (Leibniz-Institut für die Analyse des Biodiversitätswandels [LIB]). The successful candidate will be responsible for developing existing collections and establishing the Botanical Garden as a research platform. The head of the Botanical Garden is responsible for the operational organization as well as the drafting and implementation of a concept for the future development of this university institution. Suitable candidates for this appointment fulfill one or more of the above criteria. They are capable of integrating their research into existing research environment of the Department of Biology and also of developing new collaborative research fields.
The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in biology and the instruction of students pursuing a teacher training degree.
Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.
Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.
Following hearings to evaluate knowledge and expertise, management and human resources skills will be assessed by an assessment center.
