Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine at Technical University of Denmark–DTU invites applications for a position as Professor in Immune-Microbiota Interactions. The position will be placed in the Section for Protein Science and Biotherapeutics with about 100 staff members.

The Section performs high-impact research and innovation aiming at harnessing the biotechnological, diagnostic, and therapeutic potential of proteins with a particular focus on immunology, antibody research, cutting-edge proteome technologies, phage display, mammalian cell technology, glycoengineering, and high-throughput screening and diagnostics. The Section also teaches BSc and MSc students in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunology and has extensive international and national collaborations with top academic institutions as well as industrial and clinical partners.

We are looking for a professor to undertake internationally competitive research within the area of immune-microbiota interactions with special focus on metagenomics, single-cell analysis, biomarker discovery, and systems immunology in the framework of life-style related diseases. A main aim will be to complement existing competences at DTU and create synergies with state-of-the-art methodologies for metagenomics, multi-omics data generation and integration, biomarker identification and mechanisms of immune-microbiota interactions in a variety of human diseases to advance existing research agendas and create new ones.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You are expected to direct an international competitive research group focusing on immune-microbiota interactions with specific emphasis on the interplay between the microbiota, the mucosal barrier, immune cells, and environmentally relevant agents such as dietary factors in health and life-style related diseases. We also envisage that the research focuses on translational studies encompassing collaborations with clinical partners. Development of computational models to predict, e.g., the potential for production of immunoregulatory compounds by microorganisms, and approaches for integration of multi-omics data at a systems-wide level is expected to be an integrated part of the research strategy.

It is expected that you to collaborate with other university faculty members to develop our engineering educations within our biochemistry, immunology, and pharma technology activities, by developing and supporting new pedagogical teaching elements and by integration of new research activities into the curriculum of the existing and planned study programmes at the BSc, MSc, and PhD level.

You should have obtained well-documented international recognition within one or more of the above-mentioned research themes. It is required that you have documented experience as research group leader and documented teaching experience at all university levels (BSc, MSc, and PhD) in one or more areas within immunology, biomarker identification, immune-microbiota interactions and use of next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, and systems biology. It is also an advantage if you have a strong national and international network as well as experience in working with private companies and clinical partners. More specifically you are expected to strengthen activities within the following areas:

  • Identification of disease-associated microorganisms in complex biological specimens.
  • Immune regulation and its importance in development of life-style diseases
  • Analytical technologies to determine signaling pathways and regulatory networks in epithelial and immune cells at the level of single cells.
  • Translational studies focusing on diet and immune-microbiota interactions in relation to life-style related diseases in children and adults.


You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
