The lab: Cell Reprogramming and Immunity www.pereiralab.com

At the Pereira lab we are studying how hematopoietic cell fate is specified, maintained, and eventually modified or reversed. Inspired from the fields of stem cell biology, immunology, and cancer research we use an interdisciplinary approach to mechanistically understand hematopoietic cell identities and translate our findings into novel gene and cell therapies. Cellular reprogramming can be achieved experimentally in different ways, including nuclear transfer, cell fusion or expression of transcription factors, mainly explored in regenerative medicine. We have recently pioneered cell fate reprogramming approaches in immunology with induced dendritic cells (Rosa et al, Science Immunology 2018). This conceptual shift opens exciting opportunities to employ cellular reprogramming to understand dendritic cell diversity and employ this knowledge for cancer immunotherapy.

General description of the project:

The position is funded by the research project DiverDC – Understanding Dendritic Cell Diversity with Cell Reprogramming – supported by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology. The project focuses on uncovering the gene regulatory networks underlying dendritic cell (DC) specification and diversity to allow the re-creation of cDC2 and pDC cell identities from fibroblasts using cell reprogramming. The candidate will define the transcription factor codes governing DC diversity employing a forward screening approach at the single cell level and characterize mouse induced cDC2 and pDCs at a phenotypic, transcriptional and functional levels.

Candidate Profile:

The candidate should be an enthusiastic and motivated scientist, with a background in immunology or oncobiology willing to join a young international research group in a highly dynamic and multidisciplinary environment (with English as main language). Candidates with a passion for immunology, cell fate reprogramming and developing novel cancer immunotherapies who have completed their PhD thesis are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should have wide experience with tumor models in mice, flow cytometry and immunophenotyping. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
