Position Summary:
A full time Flow Cytometry Research Associate II position is available in the Analytical Cytometry Core facility for a diverse group of researchers at City of Hope. The Analytical Cytometry Core is a shared resource equipped with 6 BD Aria cell sorters, several flow cytometry analyzers of various models, a CyTOF-Helios mass cytometer, and a Nanosight small particle characterizer.

The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, dependable, and able to fulfill a service role in this busy core facility. The operator will be responsible for day to day instrument calibration, sample acquisition and/or sorting, data analysis, data management and backup, basic laboratory duties, and routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment. In addition to operation of the flow cytometers, the candidate will also utilize the CyTOF-Helios for sample acquisition. The candidate will be involved in assisting researchers with the design, execution, and interpretation of cytometry results. He/She will also keep accurate records of experiments that are run in the facility. Also, once skills permit, this candidate will be involved in training of new investigators on basic flow cytometry theory, operation of the analytical instrumentation, and utilization of various flow cytometry software programs. He/She must be able to work a somewhat flexible schedule to meet the needs of the facility.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Performs a variety of routine and non-routine laboratory procedures. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.
  • Troubleshoots procedures if experiment results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.
  • Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles and analyzes data obtained from work performed.
  • Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design. Trains lab staff in specialized procedures, equipment and theoretical concepts behind unique tests.
  • May contribute to the preparation of manuscripts by describing methods and specialized techniques. Keeps abreast of new and improved techniques.
  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.


Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • A Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience or Master's with 1 year of experience is required
  • Flow Cytometry experience including instrument operation is preferred, but training will be provided if necessary.
  • Must be willing to work with complex instrumentation
  • Must have excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours and between the Duarte and Monrovia campuses
