The Department of Physics and Applied Physics at University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a tenure track position in theoretical quantum information and condensed matter starting September 2021.

We are seeking to expand our growing research presence in theoretical and computational quantum physics, with multidisciplinary emphasis on quantum computing and quantum information theory, engineered quantum materials and condensed matter, quantum sensing and metrology, as well as quantum photonics and communications. Candidates outside these areas with exceptional track records, who could enhance or complement other departmental research areas in the quantum domain, including cosmology and nuclear astrophysics, will also be considered.

We expect to hire faculty at the level of Assistant Professor, although exceptional candidates at higher ranks would be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to setup an externally funded, world-class research program synergistic with other programs in the Department, which directly involve graduate and undergraduate students, and have a strong commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

UMass Lowell is a tier-1 research university located 25 miles northwest of Boston, with an international reputation in science and engineering, committed to educating students for lifelong success in a diverse world and conducting research activities that sustain the economic, environmental and social health of the region. With a campus-wide strategic plan to position UMass Lowell as a world-class institution, we aggressively seek a diverse talented candidate pool to further our mission.

The Department of Physics and Applied Physics currently has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 6 full-time teaching faculty members, with roughly 100 BS, 20 MS and 60 PhD students in our physics programs, and annual research expenditures over $11M.
