We are seeking a Staff Scientist who will help with daily operations at the IDDRC Cellular Imaging core, an active and growing shared-use microscopy facility in the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Research Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. This core serves the imaging needs of more than 70 laboratories in Boston Children’s Hospital and the Longwood medical area. This is a full-time position.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with an interest in a career in biological sciences and/or core sciences who enjoy working collaboratively with other scientists and in teams.  Candidates should be highly motivated, organized and have strong analytic skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.  Experience with optics or microscopy is required. They should have a Masters or an engineering degree with 7 or more years of relevant experience, or a PhD  with 4 or more years of relevant experience.  A strong academic background in math, physics, optics, science, engineering, neurobiology or biology is preferred.  Immediate job start.

Responsibilities

  • Will help manage and run the day-to-day operations of the core

  • Will help provide basic training and troubleshooting for users of the Core

  • Will be responsible for the fiscal management of the core

  • Will work with the Core director to set the future direction of the core, and to identify and acquire microscopy technology for the core.

  • Will help the Core Director to write grants to raise funds for new instruments

  • Will help organize and design educational programs and workshops for the scientific community

  • Will work closely with vendors to organize instrument demonstrations and to negotiate contracts

Will work one-on-one with different scientists to provide custom imaging services on microscopy or image analysis equipment

Minimum Education and Experience

A Master level degree in a biology field (Neuroscience or Molecular Biology preferred), with at least 7 years original and relevant research experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have analytical development and demonstrated success in working on complex novel problems. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
