Lecturer in Biology (Molecular Microbiology and Immunology)

The Program in Biology at Brown University is seeking applicants for a faculty position at the rank of Lecturer with expertise in Immunology and Microbiology and teaching experience. The position involves teaching four courses per year, formal academic advising, and service to the Program in Biology. Two of the four courses will be Immunology and Microbiology. The Lecturer will also teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate Biology courses, based on their expertise and Program needs. In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include academic advising of first year and sophomore students, advising of concentrators in the Biological Sciences, and service associated with the undergraduate program. The position will be based in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology.

We seek candidates who will contribute to the overall intellectual culture of the Program in Biology. Lecturers are included in faculty meetings, have the opportunity to advise undergraduate research projects, and contribute to curricular innovation. The Program in Biology values inclusive teaching and advising, innovative pedagogy, and welcomes candidates interested in researching STEM education within the context of their teaching. The initial appointment would be for a 3-year period with potential for renewal.

The Program in Biology strives to build a diverse and inclusive environment for all members of our community, and so we are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching, advising, service, and scholarship (if applicable) can further our efforts. Brown University aims to foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment, and its detailed vision and action plan for realizing this commitment is articulated in Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion. The Program in Biology is similarly committed to building a diverse faculty and strongly encourages women, underrepresented minorities and those who can contribute to the excellence, diversity, and inclusivity of our academic community. We ask the candidates to report any relevant experience, including work with diverse constituents, and plans in their teaching statements.

The position is expected to start with the fall 2021 semester. In selecting candidates, we will consider evidence of effective teaching, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and compatibility with the area needs and interests of the Program, as well as potential for effective participation in department or university activities.
