St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre

Located in Winnipeg, Canada the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre (https://www.sbrc.ca/) houses world-renown expertise in cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders.  The Research Centre has gained a worldwide reputation for excellence in medical research and has been a powerful international hub of innovative research and teaching that attracts top clinicians and scientists.  For the 9th year in a row, Research Infosource’s annual ranking of “Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals” has placed St. Boniface Hospital as the No. 1 research-intensive hospital in western Canada and Top 10 nationally for the year 2020.  The Research Centre continues to gain recognition for its ability to attract major funding commitments in the fields of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and nutritional studies.

Equally impressive is the Research Centre’s strong showing on Stanford University’s recently released (December 2020) list identifying the top 2 percent of the world’s nearly 7 million working scientists.  St. Boniface Hospital Research boasts ten of these top scientists in the world, from among its 250-person research team.  A remarkably high representation for one research facility, underscoring the Centre’s high quality of research.  The ability to attract top researchers from around the world is a testament to the Research Centre’s reputation as a global leader in medical science.

With its thirty laboratories, the Research Centre is deeply committed to sustaining and stimulating cutting-edge research that paves the way for state-of-the-art patient care.  This includes working with local, national and international partners to support novel and large-scale research collaborations; promoting collaboration among scientists and clinicians to increase clinical research; and working in concert with post-secondary partners to continue building transformative learning opportunities across disciplines in a manner that contributes to patient care excellence.

As the Research Centre’s new Executive Director, this is a very special opportunity to build on the strong foundation of one of Canada’s top hospital research centres and to further develop and drive its growth strategy.  The opportunity is a best fit for an accomplished scientific leader of a recognized, forward-looking medical research institute and who is ready for a next career challenge.  Reporting to the President & CEO of St. Boniface Hospital, the Executive Director will assume responsibility for the executive-level leadership and strategic management of the research portfolio and for the operations, scientific integrity, and financial sustainability of the Research Centre.  The primary mandate of the role is to drive the growth and development of research within the facility and its impact locally, nationally and internationally as a leading research institute.

As a key member of the St. Boniface Hospital executive leadership team, and in close collaboration with the Research Enterprise Committee, the Executive Director will be expected to grow the Research Centre’s profile as an integral part of St. Boniface Hospital’s long-range vision and goals.  A key strategic priority is to integrate and sustain transformative research and teaching.  The Executive Director is also expected to embody, promote and facilitate the Research Centre’s culture of collaboration and partnerships by developing and growing strategic relationships locally, nationally, and internationally.  The Executive Director is expected to have an academic appointment at the rank of Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.  If a clinician, the Executive Director may also choose to develop a clinical practice in his/her specialty.

Candidates are invited to submit their confidential expressions of interest in the form of a full academic CV to Fred Loewen, Senior Partner, Waterford Global Inc. at floewen@waterfordglobal.com
