The Engineering and Designing Immunotherapies Lab (also known as EDIT Labs or the Gustafson Lab), http://editlabs.org, is housed within the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Seattle Children’s Research Institute (SCRI) in Seattle, Washington. The goal of EDIT labs is to train a child’s own immune system to eliminate cancer. We believe the key to doing this is through first understanding where the crucial dysregulation or untrained points are in that child’s innate immune system. Then we use that information to “re-train” the innate immune system to clear cancer. The work within EDIT is highly cross-disciplinary and intensely collaborative. Our work spans from the bench to the clinic, and we work with researchers locally, nationally and internationally to understand and manipulate the innate immune system to treat pediatric cancers. Our team is defined by positive attitudes, a love of science, fundamental creativity, hard work, a hope for the future and a fundamental desire to help kids with cancer get home to more hugs from friends and family.

The hired candidate will be motivated and ready to take on highly challenging problems with innovative solutions which will often mean borrowing technologies and concepts from myriad fields. Training in techniques that are unfamiliar will be provided. However, this unique position requires enthusiasm and initiative to learn new methods, a flexible work schedule, and the ability to perform work efficiently and carefully with detailed observational note taking and record keeping. This position is well-suited for recent graduates desiring additional research experience prior to graduate or medical school – we are committed to mentoring and growing our lab members into great scientists! Though the position is open to hire immediately, we are will consider a delayed start date (May/June 2021) to accommodate an exceptional graduating senior.

A strong preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • A degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Genetic Engineering or Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated work experience (at least two years) within a laboratory setting with strong letters of reference attesting to the candidate’s attention to detail with excellent record keeping and observational analysis
  • Demonstration of efficient, successful problem solving with highly creative and innovative solutions
  • The ability to use independent judgement to address tasks and projects, and successful identification and refinement of existing procedures and practices
  • A positive attitude, a desire to learn, and an ability to work independently and as a member of an integrated team.

Please include with your CV the names of individuals who can provide letters of reference (highlighting the above qualities), a non-generic cover letter detailing what you can bring to the table and how who you are as a person will make you an ideal candidate to join our team. Applications that do not include a detailed cover letter will not be reviewed.
