Overview

The St. Jude Department of Structural Biology operates a world-class center for cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM). The Cryo-EM Center enables St. Jude researchers to visualize intricate biological structures, such as large macromolecular complexes, at atomic or near-atomic resolution, and it enables visualization of nanometer-scale 3D biological structures in their native cellular context. A shared resource open to all St. Jude investigators, the St. Jude Cryo-EM Center provides for molecular-level examination of the differences between healthy and diseased cells with unprecedented detail and clarity.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction of the Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) facility function at St. Jude. Develops policies and procedures, directs technicians and non-technical personnel, and ensures adequate staffing for the department. Supervises Cryo-EM technologists and maintains the technical aspects of Cryo-EM services. Functions as a liaison between faculty and technologists and area support staff. Recommends equipment modification and evaluates quality and accuracy of Cryo-Electron Microscopes and associated equipment. Oversees new testing procedures and related protocols. Encourages and approves introduction and demonstration of new techniques, equipment and research findings. Ensures the delivery of quality services in area of operations. Ensures performance of all quality management procedures as required. Actively develops new Cryo-EM methodologies for the characterization of proteins and biological molecules.

Minimum Education

  • PhD degree in an appropriate scientific field required

Minimum Experience

  • Five (5) years of post-degree relevant and productive work experience is required. Demonstrated excellence in the field of Cryo-Electron Microscopy is required. Demonstrated progression in continuing education in Cryo-EM technologies and applications is preferred
