The Biomarker Sciences department at Gilead is dedicated to conduct biomarker and translational research to further understanding of specific aspects of biology, inform research, development and pipeline decisions, and advance the effectiveness of available therapies in appropriate patient populations. The Molecular Epidemiology team supports biomarker activities by integrating real-world data and epidemiologic evidence within the biomarker discovery and development strategy.

The Sr. Research Scientist II, under the supervision of Molecular Epidemiology head within the Biomarker Sciences, will be responsible for design and conduct of genetic epidemiology studies using observational and genomic databases. The position is expected to work across therapeutic areas that include oncology, inflammation, virology, and immunology.

Responsibilities:
  • To lead epidemiologic studies from conception to completion' using clinico-genomic databases and/or electronic health records (EHR) data to support biomarker and drug development activities. This would include design, protocol development, implementation, vendor management, and collaboration with other functions.
  • To work collaboratively on multi-functional projects and interact with biomarker scientists and scientists from other functions including biology, bioinformatics, clinical pharmacology, clinical research, and clinical data science on a regular basis.
  • To work with biomarker therapeutic area heads and other biomarker scientists to integrate real-world data and epidemiologic approach in product or program specific biomarker strategy.
  • To initiate solution-driven projects to help understand outstanding scientific questions related-to drug and biomarker discovery and development.
  • To serve as a subject matter expert and cross functional resource for epidemiology and real-world data.
  • To represent Biomarker Sciences in internal and external collaborative projects and bring insights in design and analysis of data from an epidemiologic perspective.
  • To contribute significantly in strategy and functional development of Molecular Epidemiology team. Provide scientific oversight and mentor junior members of the team, fellows and interns.
  • To effectively communicate study findings through internal presentations, authoring conference abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.


Qualifications:
  • Candidates should have a PhD in epidemiology, genetics, public health or other relevant fields with at least 5-7 years of post-degree experience in pharma/biotech or related research organizations/academia.
  • In-depth knowledge of genome-wide association studies and other genetic association studies with clear understanding of genetic data quality issues, data management and QC steps.
  • Should have experience in conducting studies using large observational and/or multi-omics database and/or experience in conducting molecular epidemiology studies.
  • Should have proficiency with statistical software (SAS, R, etc.) and programming. Experience in applying novel analytical or computational (machine learning) technique and data science expertise to integrate and mine large complex data is a plus.
  • Candidates are expected to have familiarity with publicly available genomic databases (e.g., TCGA) and with large healthcare databases including electronic health records and claims data.
  • Should have general knowledge of drug discovery and development process.
  • Should have good oral and written communication skills demonstrated by a track record of publication(s) in major scientific journals and presentations in national or international conferences.
  • Candidates are expected to have the ability to work mostly independently. Experience in leadership roles or demonstrated leadership skill will be an advantage.
  • Candidates are expected to work in a diverse, collaborative cross-functional environment and are expected to lead or co-lead multiple projects simultaneously and to hold broader companywide vision beyond individual responsibilities.


Travel may be required up to 5-10% of time for this position.
