Our Mission:

Our Children’s Trust is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides strategic, campaign-based legal services to youth from diverse backgrounds to secure their legal rights to a safe climate. We work to protect the Earth’s climate system for present and future generations by representing young people in global legal efforts to secure their binding and enforceable legal rights to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate, based on the best available science. We support our youth clients and amplify their voices before the third branch of government in a highly strategic legal campaign that includes targeted media, education, and public engagement work to support the youths’ legal actions. Our legal work – guided by constitutional, public trust, human rights laws and the laws of nature – aims to ensure systemic and science-based climate recovery planning and remedies at federal, state, and global levels.  We seek legally-binding, countrywide and/or statewide science-based Climate Recovery Plans that will return atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations to levels below 350 ppm by the year 2100.

Position Summary:

This position will support and advance OCT’s mission and legal strategy by researching and reporting on current technically and economically feasible systemic pathways and policy options for science-based climate recovery. This position tracks cutting edge climate science and effectively communicates the science and energy transition and sequestration solutions to a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders including attorneys, judges, youth plaintiffs and their families, other scientific experts, government officials and the broader public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and report on evolving data and modeling of technically and economically feasible systemic pathways and policy options for science-based climate recovery
  • Translate technical and economic components of climate recovery policies/solutions, climate science, and greenhouse gas inventory/targets analysis for all OCT legal actions
  • Support all pending legal actions with necessary scientific and policy research as requested, including drafting factual allegations related to climate science, territorial, consumption and extraction based emissions, and energy transition options.
  • Evaluate and recommend policies needed to implement energy transitions in line with the 350 pathway and enhanced natural sequestration efforts in varying jurisdictions.
  • Maintain up-to-date understanding of and report on cutting edge and best climate science, including prescriptions for climate recovery, emissions trajectories, and climate impacts and projections to advance OCT legal actions
  • Advise Executive Director/Chief Legal Counsel and OCT legal team on best climate science when research indicates significant new developments in projections, and on climate solution science and technology to inform strategic direction of legal actions and systemic remedies
  • Work with Director of Communications, Education, and Engagement in preparing and ensuring accuracy of communications and educational materials to support OCT’s legal strategy
  • Serve as subject matter expert and represent OCT in the areas of climate science and solutions.
  • Collaborate with staff to track evidence, documents, and new publications for expert testimony in OCT cases and assist in preparation of expert declarations and reports

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work to ensure and encourage climate science and solutions information sharing within and across OCT departments and among key stakeholders (academic, business, municipalities, environmental groups, etc.)
  • Supervise and/or collaborate with contractors working on energy transition and mitigation pathways, and climate recovery and policy experts
  • Attend policy related meetings, conferences, and public events on behalf of OCT; serve as OCT spokesperson on climate science and solutions, develop relationships with policy-related organizations and energy experts to foster OCT’s legal and policy efforts
  • Support trial preparation, including expert reports, depositions, demonstratives, discovery responses, and testimony
  • Prepare and give presentations/testimony at important conferences, before legislative bodies, and other events as requested
  • Support presentations by staff and plaintiffs that include climate science/energy transition information
  • Identify opportunities arising from emerging trends and generate options to advance OCT’s climate solution goals

  • University degree and masters-level equivalent experience in a climate or energy science discipline
  • Four years of scientific research and/or policy analysis experience in clean energy transitions, energy system planning, or climate change
  • Strong knowledge of energy and climate change science or policy
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills across disciplines and audiences
  • Experience with technical writing and ability to interpret technical material for general audiences
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills including an understanding of GHG inventories and modelling
  • Familiarity with or interest in learning litigation processes and legal jargon

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in climate/earth sciences or energy systems field
  • Strong project management skills; able to balance reactive daily tasks with planning and stewarding longer-term projects
  • Public speaking or media experience
  • Awareness and understanding of a range of energy and climate analysis tools
  • Basic design skills to convert complex information into easily understood infographics
  • Excellent networking skills and alliance-building experience
  • Understanding of legislative or regulatory processes
  • Prior work with government, NGO or non-profit advocacy organizations

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range: $72,973 - $81,560 Benefits include 100% employer paid medical and dental for employee, long- and short-term disability, life insurance, SIMPLE IRA plan, generous vacation, sick and holiday leave including restorative leave after 6 years. This position is part of the OCTWA Bargaining Unit.

Working Conditions/Work Schedule:

Work is primarily performed in a standard office setting. Work is primarily performed Monday through Friday; however, evening and weekend hours may be necessary dependent upon deadlines and workload. The office is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all work is remote.
