Position Summary:

The Department of Physiology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.  The position is a continuing, 100 percent, twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Tenure will be within the Department of Physiology with a possible joint appointment in another department. Appointment will include research space and competitive start-up funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the Medical School curriculum as well as in the undergraduate/graduate programs of the Department. Progress in rank will require demonstration of productivity in research, teaching, and service.  Exact distribution of duties/responsibilities will be annually negotiated and finalized between the Department Chair and the faculty member, based on external research funding and programmatic curriculum needs.

Research: Conduct research, prepare and submit grant proposals, prepare and publish papers, attend scientific meetings, and present talks and posters; guide the research programs of graduate students and supervise other laboratory personnel.

Teaching: Prepare and deliver lectures and/or laboratory experiments in courses offered by the Department of Physiology in the graduate and undergraduate curriculums; serve as a facilitator and/or resource faculty in the medical school curriculum; participate in the education of graduate students by membership on thesis and dissertation committees.

Service: Engage in service activities beneficial to the department, school, university, and scientific community, as appropriate to academic rank.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have (1) a Ph.D. in physiology or related biomedical science field; (2) minimum of two years postdoctoral or equivalent experience; and (3)evidence of high-quality research.  The applicant's specific area of research must be competitive for external funding.  

For consideration of appointment at the Associate Professor rank, applicants must have tenure-track or tenured faculty status at a university or equivalent, a high-quality extramurally-funded research program, and a strong record of research productivity.
