Job Details

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for a postdoctoral or a semi-independent Research Associate position depending on his/her previous experience and accomplishments to join the highly collaborative and dynamic research group of Dr. Kvaratskhelia at Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Colorado School of Medicine. The research will focus on further understanding and characterizing interactions of new generation HIV-1 inhibitors and cellular cofactors with cognate viral proteins using structural biology approaches including X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM as well as state-of-the-art biochemical assays including Homogenous-Time Resolved Fluoresce, AlphaScreen, Surface-Plasmon Resonance, Dynamic Light Scattering and Mass Spectrometry. All the instrumentation needed to carry out these studies are available in Dr. Kvaratskhelia’s laboratory or the campus core facilities. We have direct access to X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM facilities located in the immediately adjacent building. The X-ray crystallography facility is fully equipped for biomolecular crystallization, crystal screening, data collection, data processing, structure-determination and model building. The cryo-EM facility has a state-of-the-art 200kV FEI Talos Arctica transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dedicated software for automated cryo-EM data collection. The EM facility is run by a full-time manager, ensuring smooth and consistent operation, as well as training of new users on basic aspects of cryo-EM data collection. Cryo-EM experiments will be conducted in collaboration with the group of Prof. Francisco Asturias, a leading expert in cryo-EM whose research is focused on EM characterization of macromolecular complexes and interactions. This will provide a great opportunity to receive training in cryo-EM, a powerful and rapidly expanding technology. In addition, successful candidates will have the opportunity to interact with virologists in Dr. Kvaratskhelia’s laboratory to validate the biological significance of their structural findings.

Early-stage researchers will be considered for a postdoctoral position. More experienced researchers with previous substantial postdoctoral accomplishments will be considered for a semi-independent Research Associate position. Previous experience in X-ray crystallography is preferred. Training in other techniques will be provided.

The above research projects are expected to generate high impact publications and provide the postdoctoral researcher/Research Associate with an excellent opportunity for further career development in academia or pharmaceutical companies. Our lab is located on the top floor of Research Complex II and has unimpeded, spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is a highly desirable place for postdoctoral experience with ample activities year-round.
