What You Will Achieve

As a Principal Scientist, you will be at the center of our operations and you'll find that everything we do, every day, is in line with an unwavering commitment to quality. You will be recognized as a technical expert and a significant scientific contributor. You will help Pfizer develop new and improved processes used in the research and development of our drugs. You will be focused on managing the production process and staff within the facility which is responsible for cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Processes) production of clinical drug substance and drug product for the assigned Therapy portfolio.

Your innovative mindset will help us develop economical, efficient and safe chemical manufacture of experimental and active drug materials. With your deep knowledge of the discipline, you will regularly contribute at the therapeutic area level and can represent the department on multidisciplinary teams. You will be entrusted with setting objectives and planning resource requirements for your project team. You will be using your scientific judgment to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience. You will undertake mentoring activities to guide team members.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Contribute at the therapeutic area level and represent the group on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Influence at the therapeutic area or discipline level and increasingly at the project team level.
  • Apply technical and functional knowledge to design experiments, assist in project design, and independently complete work.
  • Assist the compliance activities on safety and regulatory requirements that are expected and documented through the internal training program.
  • Execute lab-based studies to improve productivity and/or robustness of licensed processes.
  • Lead the fermentation team in creation and execution of complex experimental designs, and oversee interpretation of large data sets, including multifactorial experimental design.
  • Lead transfers to pilot and commercial facilities for the production of clinical and commercial materials.
  • Assist on process improvement projects.


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 12+ years of experience
  • Previous experience in designing and executing components of major experimental programs for biologics drug substance production in the laboratory or pilot-plant setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of NMR techniques for evaluating biological structures.
  • Sound understanding of statistical experimental design and analysis is a benefit.
  • Strong working knowledge of the drug development process for progression of a biological incumbent.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision as well as in a collaborative environment of dedicated engineers and scientists.


Nice-to-Have
  • PhD and 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in supporting scale-up and technology transfer to pilot or commercial scale facilities.
  • Extensive experience with protein and carbohydrate chemistry in general and bioconjugation chemistry specifically is strongly desired.
  • Proficient in benchtop bioreactor or chromatography operations.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work will be performed in a typical development laboratory environment and in GLP/GMP manufacturing facilities including the operations areas of pilot plants.


NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional weekend work and possible travel to support development projects.
