Essential Functions:

The MBA Intern will work with the Commercial Digital Innovation team and is based in Foster City, CA. She/he/they will have responsibility for the development, scale and delivery of new applications for a digital platform called PrEP Hub that encourages appropriate individuals at risk for HIV to talk to their healthcare provider and learn more about how to initiate, maintain, or restart PrEP, a medicine that averts HIV infection.

Communities of color are at increased risk of HIV. According to the CDC, the overall lifetime risk of HIV in the U.S. is 1 in 106, but the risk is higher in unrepresented minorities (African American Men: 1 in 22; African American Women 1:54; Latinx Men: 1:51; Latinx Women: 1 in 51). In African American MSM the risk of HIV diagnosis is 1 in 2 and in Latinx MSM it is 1 in 5. In addition, the social determinants of health, HIV-related discrimination as well as the intersectionality of racism, homophobia, weak healthcare systems, COVID-19 and stigma stymie efforts to reach communities of color and other marginalized populations.

The successful candidate will formulate a digital plan to empower at-risk individuals to access health education and related services with the goal of disintermediating the structural barriers that prevent individuals from accessing HIV prevention.

Over the course of the summer, the intern will undertake a project to create a new action module for PrEP Hub (https://theprephub.com/home.htm) that engages underrepresented individuals and/or communities at risk for HIV to learn about PrEP by leveraging digital marketing, digital health tools and innovative health partnerships. This role interfaces with several cross functional partners including US marketing, Public Affairs, Advocacy, Legal, Regulatory, IT and other groups to ideate on digital health solutions to engage persons at risk of HIV. The role may allow for external engagement with HIV community advocates, digital incubators and technology companies.

Specific Responsibilities:

The intern will work closely with the Digital Innovation team, extended teams in Commercial and executive management to ensure cross-functional buy-in and execution on projects. Illustrative examples of potential intern projects:
  • Build new functionalities to PrEP Hub by leveraging principles of user centric UX/UI design and agile
  • Identify external digital partnerships to advance business value and patient engagement and empowerment in HIV prevention.
  • Help define and articulate Gilead's Commercial Digital Strategic Framework in PrEP, inclusive of all applicable digital vehicles (targeting patients, caregivers, HCPs, payers, policy makers), content strategy, KPI dashboards and organizational capability needs.

  • Present digital concepts to senior stakeholders and provide compelling thought leadership on digitalization that can be leveraged by marketing, communications and executive teams

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
    • Must be enrolled in a full-time MBA or Masters/PhD program

  • Must have the ability to complete a 10-12 consecutive week internship between May - September 2020

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong relationship management skills and ability to work effectively cross-functionally and with senior leadership

  • 4+ years' work experience prior to business/graduate school in either a scientific or business role preferred (e.g. management consulting, software development, marketing, business development, strategy)

  • Prior healthcare experience preferred
