This will be addressed by generation of strong data packages from target hypotheses derived from academic outreach and initiatives. You will be an essential member of this team and creatively design and execute key experiments to address the basic and translational biology of novel drug targets, their molecular pathways, and their connection to human disease. With your knowledge in the discipline, you will be an active team member contributing at the project team level. You will be using your scientific judgment with guidance from your manager and/or peer experts to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience and consulting others. Your ability to plan will help in preparing short-term work activities on projects.

The Pfizer Oncology Research Unit in La Jolla is seeking a full-time employee to support the drug discovery process for innovative medicines to treat cancer. We are seeking a B.S. level cell biologist with experience performing cell based high throughput screens (HTS). The candidate should have skills and expertise in tissue culture, various assay technologies, assay development, automation and instrumentation, and data analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to combine research and technology in order to help Pfizer discover breakthrough medicines that change patients' lives.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Perform cell based assays HTS while using various specialized robotic systems and data management software packages.
  • Optimize/Miniaturize existing assays as well as develop new assays for HTS.
  • Grow, maintain, and scale up >10 cancer cell lines simultaneously in order to generate cell reagents for downstream assays.
  • Critically QC and process results
  • Prioritize and organize one's own work to meet deadlines.
  • Help maintain laboratory instruments
  • Record experiments and results into laboratory notebooks.


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • A B.S in biochemistry, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, or other related field with 3+ years in an industrial or academic pharmaceutical laboratory setting.
  • 3+ years of cell biology/tissue culture experience and a minimum of 1+ years in a HTS environment.
  • Excellent aseptic techniques and organization to perform tissue culture of >10 cell lines simultaneously without cross contamination.
  • Familiarity with assay technologies such as HiBiT, ePL, NanoBRET, Luminescence, Fluorescence, HTRF, ELISA, MSD.
  • Familiarity with using laboratory automation and instruments such as traditional liquid handlers, fluorescence/luminescence based plate readers, bulk reagent dispensers, plate washers, hand held pipettors, etc.
  • Strong organization skills with an emphasis on attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and a fast learner
  • Strong computer and software skills to include but not limited to being highly proficient with Microsoft Office.


Nice-to-Have
  • Wet lab experience running both biochemical/biophysical AND cell-based assays.
  • Experience with both traditional 2D cancer cell culture AND 3D culture models.
  • Additional knowledge of molecular, biochemical, and biophysical techniques such as molecular cloning, lentivirus, siRNA, CRISPR, SPR, DSF/TSA, CETSA.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidate will be required to operate various laboratory instruments and hand-held pipettors, lift and transport large stacks of plates, and will need to walk between labs to get to various instruments and supply centers regularly.
  • Candidate will also be performing tissue culture duties which may require spending several hours sitting in front of a biological safety cabinet.
  • Candidate may need to use step stools to climb and reach items above eye level.
  • Candidate will also diagnose and repair equipment with various tools occasionally.
  • Must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment with lab coat, protective eye wear and gloves.
  • The job can require standing and walking for most of the day regularly.


NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Generally speaking, a standard work schedule is required in order to perform lab responsibilities and to attend various meetings throughout the week.
  • However, in light of the current pandemic and the desire to minimize close contact, staggered work shifts have been implemented for the current times.
  • Currently, shifts are either morning/afternoon or afternoon/evening.
