HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Active Polymers some 100 scientists research multi-functional, polymer-based biomaterials for applications in regenerative medicine. Their implants and active agent delivery systems provide customised properties and functions to restore impaired body functions.

The Institute of Active Polymers of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a Postdoc (m/f/d) in the area of Computational Image Analysis / Bioinformatics (Image Analysis and Object/Pattern Recognition).

The related multidisciplinary project focuses on using the modern computational analysis to process and analyze the biological image dataset, thereby to elucidate the mechanism of the interaction of stem cells and polymer-based biomaterials. In addition, this project aims to develop novel computational analysis techniques and simulation methods for improved accuracy and efficiency in biological data processing. The place of employment is Teltow (near Berlin) Germany.

Your tasks

  • correlative analysis and high-content imaging technologies to study stem cell-biomaterial interaction
  • using computational intelligence to process and analyze large images (2D/3D) and video dataset of high-resolution microscopy / tomography
  • developing automatic computational methods to predict and describe the changes of stem cell behavior and function (e.g. size, shape, migration) with time
  • elucidating the cellular signaling pathways and cell-material interaction mechanism
  • writing publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • presenting research results in international scientific conferences

Your profile

  • PhD in computational analysis, bioinformatics or relating fields, preferably with a background in cell biology/biomaterials
  • experience on dataset analysis using computational intelligence
  • knowledge on coding/programming language and Linux system, experience on Python, Matlab
  • preferably with the knowledge on computational models and simulations
  • fluent English (oral presentation and writing scientific papers)
  • high communication skills for working in an interdisciplinary team
