The USDA, ARS, Midwest Area is seeking a Supervisory Research Chemist to serve as Research Leader of the Bio-Oils Research Unit (BOR) located in Peoria, Illinois at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research.  The goals of the Unit are to conduct and lead research to enable processes for the commercial production of oils, meal, gums, waxes, and value-added products from oilseed crops.  The incumbent develops and maintains an independent research program and provides leadership to a group of scientists and support staff developing new commodity plant oils and bio-based products that provide technically and economically competitive alternatives to petroleum-derived materials.  As Research Leader, the incumbent provides vision; establishes and maintains an advisory stakeholder base representing the various research projects to advocate for enhancing the unit and to enable commercialization of products; exercises leadership and supervises personnel assigned to the unit; maximizes the creativity and productivity of the unit; hires personnel and manages the human, fiscal, and physical resources assigned to the unit; serves as the Unit fundholder; provides technical information and consultation both internal and external to ARS; and ensures the proper interpretation and reporting of scientific research results.
