Professor of Biomaterials

Ref PAR 2020/1254

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Biomaterials, is internationally renowned in the field of tissue integration of implants and prostheses. The deciphering of the mechanisms of integration versus the failure of integration is important for the development of novel implants for clinical use. Research is performed in collaborative projects with Swedish and international universities and companies. The department is a driver in several projects with clinical colleagues and material science experts. Examples are studies on the mechanisms of osteoinduction of bioceramics, cell-material and bacteria-material interactions and osseointegrated amputation prostheses (Strategic governmental research grants together with Chalmers, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, VINNOVA, and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital). Three of the current projects are performed together with European research partners (EU projects). This advertisement aims to recruit a professor who has the ambition to further develop the research and education programme in biomaterials, as well as to engage in interactions with the surrounding society.

Subject area

Biomaterials

Subject area description

Biomaterials is an interdisciplinary research discipline with a focus on the interactions between materials and biology. The discipline combines knowledge of material properties with the cellular and molecular processes in the adjacent tissue, tissue composition and structure and biomechanics in normal and pathological conditions. The focus is on curiosity-driven fundamental research with subsequent clinical applications.

Teaching and education in biomaterials is at both basic and advanced levels. Currently, the research and pedagogic programmes within the Department of Biomaterials are mainly focused on the behaviour of materials in the musculoskeletal system, encompassing, for example, oral and craniofacial reconstruction, orthopaedic implants and bone-anchored hearing aids.

Job assignments

We are searching for a leading international researcher in biomaterials. The assignment includes the leadership, planning and execution of a research programme directed at understanding the interactions between biomaterials and tissues in vivo. The application of advanced analytical methods to determine the relationships between material properties and structural, cellular and molecular processes during the regeneration of tissues or the integration of materials into tissues is of considerable importance. The position includes teaching in biomaterials at basal and advanced levels and the recruitment and supervision of doctoral students with different interdisciplinary backgrounds. The assignment also includes the development of new courses on basal and advanced levels together with other disciplines.

It is expected that the duties normally assigned to a professorship, such as administration, internal and external commissions of trust and national and international representation of the discipline, will be fulfilled. This position involves substantial international and national collaborations with other researchers and stakeholders, including the technical/engineering disciplines, health care and the MedTech industry. It is expected that the new professor will attract national or international research grants.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for a position as teacher are given in the Ch. 4 Sect. 3-4 Higher Education Ordinance and in the employment regulations of the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible to be employed as a professor, the person must demonstrate scientific and pedagogic skills in the subject.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Scientific, pedagogic and administrative skills constitute the assessment criteria for this position.

The evaluation will rank the skills in the following order: first, scientific skills; second, pedagogic skills; and third, administrative skills. The evaluation of the candidate’s scientific skills will primarily be based on skills within the research field of the position, such as peer-reviewed scientific articles. In addition, the ability of the candidate to lead research and development work, PhD students and research staff/collaborators and communicate their research with society will also be part of the evaluation. A documented ability to receive national or international research grants is meritorious. In the assessment of pedagogic skills, special emphasis will be placed on experience with supervision, teaching and examination in educational programmes at the basal, advanced and graduate student levels and other pedagogical merits.

The ability to collaborate and experience with academic leadership will be additionally weighted.

It is expected that the applicant will have mastered writing English scientific text and have good general communication skills in English.

Applicants who do not have a formal pedagogical higher education at the University of Gothenburg are expected to undergo such education or have the equivalent at another higher education institution validated within one year from the start of employment.

Employees for whom Swedish is not their native language will be provided an opportunity to learn Swedish within a 2-year period from the start of their employment, according to the language policy of the University of Gothenburg.

Employment

The employment is a full time (100%) permanent post and located at The Institute of Clinical Sciences.

Entrance upon office: Autumn 2021
