The Golovko laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BSc), School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), University of North Dakota (UND), is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the area of analytical biochemistry. The identified individual will be responsible for characterizing the biochemical and morphological profiles associated with brain angiogenesis under hypoxia, and perform evaluations of novel genetically modified animals. The goal of the project is to test our novel mechanism for brain angiogenesis regulation under hypoxia. The long-term goal of the project is to identify a drug target to regulate brain angiogenesis as the recovery mechanism after brain injury after stroke, heart arrest, and other neurotraumatic injuries.

Duties & Responsibilities

The identified Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for designing, performing, and documenting experiments including but not limited to analytical procedures such as spectrophotometry, TLC, HPLC, GC, Mass Spectrometry, SPE; perform molecular biology studies (western blot analysis, PCR, siRNA experiments), data analysis, manuscript preparation, presenting results at meetings, submitting fellowship grant applications, laboratory organization, and training undergraduate, graduate, and medical students conducting research in the laboratory.

Minimum Requirements

  • A PhD in biomedical or chemical sciences (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biology, or related field)
  • Excellent knowledge and a minimum of 1 year hands on experience working with analytical techniques, such as: chemical characterization techniques including sample preparation and processing (extraction, purification), chromatography (GC, HPLC, TLC), spectroscopy, mass spectrometry.
  • Minimum 1 year hands on experience with molecular biology techniques (Western Blot, PCR, siRNA).
  • Minimum of one first (or co-first) author or middle author peer-reviewed journal publication.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-year experience with biological sample handling and preparation for analysis
  • Minimum 1-year hands-on experience with laboratory animals (rodents) including injections, surgeries, behavioral assessments.
  • Minimum 1-year hands-on experience with cell cultures
  • Minimum 1 year hands on experience with gene knockdown techniques and genotyping
  • Minimum 1-year experience with metabolomics and proteomics
  • Minimum 6 months experience with radiotracer approaches
  • Excellent communication and scientific writing skills. Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently, excellent organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities, ability to work overtime and flexible shifts are required.

Minimum Hiring Salary

This position is a twelve (12) month, non-tenure track, special appointment with University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Up to $44,000/year + benefits, commensurate with qualifications
