 The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Science Adviser for the Animal Research Issues department.  The primary purpose of this position is to provide scientific advice on programs that seek to replace the use of animals in testing and research through regulatory, legislative, and corporate reforms.   

This position will be responsible for:

  • Researching and analyzing certain areas of testing and research that involve the use of animals, including products regulated (or research funded) by the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies;
  • Making strategic recommendations based on findings to further the organization’s work;
  • Writing manuscripts, scoping documents, white papers, and public comments in response to government proposals;
  • Staying up to date on scientific advances and technologies that seek to replace the use of animals;
  • Contributing scientific expertise to legislative and regulatory efforts;
  • Ensuring accuracy of the organization’s scientific information and communications by reviewing and editing press releases, blogs, social media posts, etc.;
  • Building relationships with government agencies, companies and other stakeholders to explain and promote the work of the organization in order to guide and influence their support of the organization’s work;
  • Participating in conferences and meetings by giving scientific presentations and providing comments.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent work experience required;
  • A minimum of two (2) progressive years of experience related to the use of animals in laboratories and alternatives to animal testing/research required; five (5) years is preferred;
  • Excellent research and analysis skills;
  • Thorough knowledge of animal testing and non-animal alternatives;
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and product approval processes of the Food and Drug Administration and other government agencies preferred;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellent demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective member in a team environment;
  • Willing and able to travel;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
