The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is proud to announce a faculty search for the SPIE Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences, a position that will target the broad area of quantum systems engineering.

The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is world renowned for the outstanding breadth and depth of its research and education programs in Optical Sciences. Optics resides at the core of many critical science and technology fields, from fundamental discovery in optical physics to engineering innovations enabling biomedicine, remote sensing, communications, energy, manufacturing and more.

The college, and the University of Arizona more broadly, have recently invested in new faculty in Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE), an area that is embraced broadly across the university as one of the research initiatives in Arizona’s new strategic plan. Very recently the Wyant College of Optical Sciences has taken the leadership role in establishing the Center for Quantum Networks (CQN), one of the four new NSF Gen 4 Engineering Research Centers in the USA.

Testbeds and aggressive demonstrator systems will be key to advancing and driving synergies in underlying QISE research disciplines, and can also often be the basis for fundamental discovery of unanticipated phenomena that ultimately govern the efficacy of practical systems. The SPIE Endowed Chair in Optical Sciences will help to lead the QISE efforts in full systems-level demonstrations of quantum systems that aim to outperform, or perform functions that are not possible with, any classical counterparts. Examples may include network functions such as quantum repeaters, distributed quantum data-base access, or the realization of new physical and imaging sensor system architectures leveraging quantum and entanglement effects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This tenured/tenure-track position anticipates a candidate with demonstrated strength in his or her field of research, with duties including:

  • Cultivating a world-renowned research program.
  • Establishing a strong teaching record.
  • Participating in both undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Participating in service and outreach for the College.

Applicants should have a proven track record of research and teaching, including a clear potential to continue or establish a substantial research program in his or her field of interest that will attract program funding from industry and/or government sources. For private sector or government laboratory applicants, lack of a proven teaching and funded-research record could be remedied with other related credentials that demonstrate strong communications skills and a demonstrated history of technical depth and leadership. We seek an individual who will attract and mentor a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students and colleagues. Development of novel courses pertaining to the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as exceptional teaching of our core curriculum is expected.

This position is viewed as suitable for accomplished and highly promising individuals, with examples including current Associate Professors, Scientists, Full Professors, or equivalent positions at non-academic institutions. Rate of Pay : Salary Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Qualifications: A PhD or Masters Degree

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and leadership roles in research and development of prototype and deployed advanced optical and quantum-related systems in an industrial, government, national lab, or academic setting is highly beneficial.
