General Engineers/Technical Analyst – Mid-level

If so, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) is looking for you!

The NRO Cadre is looking for General Engineers and Technical Analysts staff to help us conquer challenges such as:

  • Monitoring the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Tracking international terrorists, drug traffickers, and criminal organizations
  • Monitoring global troop movement and weapon advancement
  • Supporting international peacekeeping and humanitarian relief operations
  • Assessing the impact of natural disasters

The current hiring focus is for individuals with the following degrees and experience for General Engineers and Technical Analyst:

  • Aerospace or Astronautical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics or Computer Engineering
  • Software Engineering (including AGILE development)
  • Systems Engineering
  • Thermal Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Applied Physics
  • Applied Mathematics (including operations research)
  • Computer Science (including AI/ML)
  • Cyber Security (including Information Systems Security)

Major responsibilities and duties include:

  • Plans, develops, advises on, and implements crucial projects and segments of NRO programs
  • Prepares and evaluates plans and designs for engineering projects; researches technology trends and patterns; conducts technical analysis; evaluates the value and applicability of new technology; and provides engineering expertise and advice on program planning over a broad range of engineering, architecture or scientific programs
  • Manages technical issues and risks to balance cost, schedule and technical performance
  • Investigates or develops new design, testing, operational methods and criteria, procedures and/or instructions for engineering, architecture or scientific problems; proposes new technical policies and practices
  • Provides recommendations on engineering, architecture or scientific problems, programs, and functions to a broad customer base
  • Develops and modifies analytic models and methods to meet the requirements of cost, performance, and effectiveness studies and variance analyses
  • Gathers historical cost, performance, and effectiveness data and establishes relationships between system characteristics and design criteria
  • Synthesizes science and technology capabilities to create new concepts and prototypes with little supervisory oversight
  • Evaluates research and development test results with limited supervisory oversight
  • Interacts with NRO user community regarding system requirements and/or operational objectives
  • Assesses effectiveness of operationally fielded capabilities

You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.  This position requires that you obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance. You will also be subject to pre-employment and periodic drug testing and a polygraph examination.

Qualification Requirements

General Engineer position requires minimum education of a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field (STEM Degree such as, engineering technology, physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics,) in addition to the requirements below. 

Technical Analyst position requires a combination of education (certifications included) and experience.

Applicant must have directly applicable experience that demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. 

Full Performance (GG-11 to GG-13)

2021 Salary range for Washington DC Area: $72,750 – $134,798 

A PhD in a related area of study may qualify applicants for advanced starting grades and salaries.

In addition to a Bachelor’s or higher-level degree, you must have related experience.

Qualifying experience may have been acquired in any public or private sector job, but will clearly demonstrate past experience in the application of the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform and is typically in or directly related to the duties of the position as described above.  Experience must be reflected in your resume.

These positions are a Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) position in the Excepted Service under 10 USC 1601.

Additional Information About Working for NRO Cadre

Basic Eligibility for a position with NRO:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • You must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance
  • You will be subject to pre-employment and periodic drug testing
  • You will be subject to pre-employment and periodic polygraph examinations

Hiring Incentives

The NRO may offer hiring incentives and other entitlements at management’s discretion.

Trial Period

All new DCIPS employees will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
