An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Head of Licensing & Ventures who will work closely with his/her part­ners in scientific research units to deliver commer­cial success strategies across the licensing at Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU). The role will involve pro­viding day-to-day leadership to a highly capable group, hel­ping them to achieve the goals of the HMGU in turning some of the world’s most exciting techno­logies into commercial reality.

100039 Your responsibilities

  • Leading and inspiring the team to ensure that they are highly motiva­ted, skilled and develo­ping professionally
  • Collaborating with the CEO and the Scientific Management Team to set group goals and ensuring that the bud­gets are managed effectively
  • Developing strong relationships of influence with senior and high-profile stake­holders both internally within the HMGU and externally (e.g. with funders, inves­tors, industry partners and patient groups)
  • Working closely with the HMGU scientific research units to deliver stra­tegic initiatives to trans­late its research outputs into real world impact
  • Turning great ideas into viable commer­cial actions
  • Your qualification

    Reporting to the CEO, the success­ful candidate will come from a strong technology industry back­ground and have experience of commercialising life science inno­vations and IP, including those origina­ting from sciene, and ideally including spin-outs / start-ups. Particularly desirable is direct industry experience of drug dis­covery / development / trans­lational medicine, and of negotiating associated licen­sing and collaboration agree­ments. The candidate will have a degree in economics or natural sciences degree and ideally a PhD or equivalent. Helmholtz Zentrum München is looking for a versa­tile person who has the ability to act with wis­dom, diplomacy, integrity and sound commer­cial judgement.

    The successful candi­date will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Providing great leader­ship, being open and energetic and with the ability to motivate, inspire and develop teams to achieve world class performance
  • Negotiating complex deals and strategic industry partner­ships with tact, tenacity and persistence
  • Supporting major trans­lational funding applications and strategic initiatives
  • Working effectively with key senior stake­holders both internally and exter­nally, assertively influencing them and, where appropriate, showing creativity and resilience in stra­tegic business situations
  • In depth management experience to enable effective colla­boration with specialist functions and experts outside one's own pro­fessional discipline
  • Proven track record in tur­ning an idea into measurable economic success
