The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, TN, is seeking outstanding applicants for two twelve-month full-time, tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant, associate or full professor level.

 Qualifications

 The applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. The ideal candidates are expected to have strong NIH funded (NIH R01 grant/s or similar equivalents) research programs in an area related to the research strengths of the department, included but not limited to pharmacology, physiology, renal (both lower urinary tract and kidney), electrophysiology, ion channel research, urological research, smooth muscle function and regulation, drug discovery and development related to identifying novel pharmacological targets for urological indications, gene therapy, epigenomics, metabolomics, or other related disciplines.

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to maintain competitive extramural funding, a commitment to excellence in teaching in our PharmD and PhD Graduate Program, and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 The Chair of the Department, Dr. Georgi V. Petkov, is an internationally recognized scientist with a strong NIH-funded research program in urology. As Chairman of the Department, Dr. Petkov plays a key role in ensuring that the UTHSC College of Pharmacy meets and exceeds its goals and objectives, including maintaining our status among the country’s leading NIH-funded pharmacy schools. Dr. Petkov is encouraging the establishment of research collaborative teams aiming at submissions of large NIH P-, K-, T- and U-level grants such as program project, training, and center grants with the leading PI based in the Department. To facilitate such collaborative efforts, in the past two years, Dr. Petkov aggressively recruited five diverse NIH-funded tenure-track faculty, thus increasing the available research expertise and NIH funding in the Department and further enhancing the national recognition of the College. As a result, our College recently moved from No. 26 to No. 16 in NIH funding among Colleges of Pharmacy. An important aspect in this context was Dr. Petkov’s recently awarded NIH/NIDDK P20-DK123971 Urology Research Center Grant “Center for Human Urinary Bladder Myogenic Mechanisms by Ion Channels in Health and Disease”. Dr. Petkov also established an NIH-funded P20 Educational Enrichment Program with the ultimate goal of training students in urological research with particular focus on recruiting minority students. More recently, Dr. Petkov teamed up with two other prominent UTHSC PIs to submit another major NIH training grant application, “Urological Epidemiology K12 Career Development Training Program”. Most importantly, Dr. Petkov is currently working to expand our NIH-funded Urology Center to the level of an NIH-funded U-54 George M. O’Brien Research Center in Memphis, TN. 

 NIH-funded candidates that can contribute to this team effort under Dr. Petkov’s leadership will be given special consideration. The candidate does not necessarily have to have a prior track record in urological research but may be someone who would bring new unique expertise to the field and the Department. For example, special preference would be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise and experience in genomics technology such as next-generation sequencing, Sanger, and microarray to provide molecular profiling data and polymorphisms for ion channel targets and their regulatory mechanisms in human and rodent models of urinary bladder disease. Additional preference will be given to candidates with strong background in RNA interference, PCR, RT-PCR, CRISPR, ChIP, Western blotting, single cell RNA sequencing, and in visceral smooth muscle genomics.
