Overview:

Cures Start Here. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch), home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to developing and advancing biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, Fred Hutch’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Fred Hutch, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Careers Start Here.

Responsibilities:

The Gujral Lab (http://research.fhcrc.org/gujral) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow interested in studying the tumor microenvironment. Our lab combines approaches from molecular genetics with cell and systems biology to study the interactions between tumor cells and host cells in the tumor microenvironment.

A major focus of our lab is to study how cancer cells and immune cells influence the growth and functions of each other in advanced stage solid tumors by integrating recently developed proteomics and computational methods with the specific cellular system (Cell, 2014; Cell Systems, 2020; Translational Research, 2020). In our lab, we leverage different data-driven approaches (e.g., transcriptomic profiling, high throughput live cell imaging, screening tools) to inform the work of focused biology, which utilizes conventional tools including transgenic mouse models, molecular and biochemical approaches. The goal is to be able to study the cell system as a whole and at microscopic levels to find solutions for cancer and other diseases.

Specific projects could vary from tumor micro-environment to immuno-oncology to tumor metabolism and drug resistance.  Depending on their specific interests, the Fellow could learn about different cancer models, including PDX, orthotopic, chemical-induced, and xenograft, and many other current methodologies such as reverse phase lysate microarrays, high throughput live cell microscopy-based assays, immunofluorescence microscopy, western blot analysis, RNAseq, quantitative PCR and use of various data analysis software.  In addition, Fellow will also have the opportunity to present their research during lab meetings and scientific conferences and write, submit, and publish scientific papers. The Fellow will report directly to Dr. Gujral but is expected to integrate and function as a team member at the Gujral lab and Human Biology division.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have:

  • A recent Ph.D. in a relevant field
  • Knowledge and experience in cancer biology, biochemistry, and immunology
  • Track record of productive research, with at least one first-author publication
