Chair, Department of Pathology & Microbiology
Applications are invited from high-energy, customer-focused, entrepreneurial physician/scientist/educator to fill the position of Chair, Department of Pathology & Microbiology for the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine in Omaha Nebraska.
We are seeking a leader interested in shepherding a complex and fast-growing Midwest-leading department with a rich history into its next phase of development. With more than 70 fulltime physicians, clinical providers and basic scientists, the department is also supported by a large volunteer and emeritus faculty to provide a collaborative educational and scientific environment. A fully accredited ACGME residency program and five fellowships programs offer highly interactive opportunities for advanced training.
The subspecialty-based anatomic and clinical services provide consultation and testing through a large reference laboratory, Regional Pathology Services (RPS), with over 600 clients in 26 states that benefits from a digital imaging and advanced informatics strategy. For over 20 years the department-based Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) has provided state-of-art support to the state and federal government leading to a global reputation in emerging infectious diseases.
Research funding for FY2019 was listed at number 30 by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research with a world-class program in microbiology and virology. Additional areas of excellence include cancer biology and immunology and with considerable overlap between 23 cutting-edge laboratories supported by an interdisciplinary graduate program with over 70 Ph.D. students. Growing research opportunities exist in cellular therapy based on advanced clinical program and department directed GMP facility.
The successful Chair candidate will be an MD or MD/PhD or equivalent with national recognition as a leader in pathology and prior administrative experience with a history of innovative research with federal funding. The next chair will have a strategic vision for expanding research and clinical programs in cellular therapy and continuing the growth of an interactive basic/translational research program in the department that bridges multiple departments and Institutes. They will guide the department’s teaching programs and provide strong research mentorship to clinical and research faculty.
