Tissue Culture 1. Maintains and establishes tissue culture cell lines, which requires

good sterile technique and ability to determine cell counts and cell

viability using microscope and hemocytometer.

2. Monitors, orders and shelves tissue culture supplies.

3. Works with primary human leukocytes and tumor biopsy samples

4. Establishes short-term cell cultures using human or mouse tissues.

5. Some protocols require work on weekends/holidays and time away must be

coordinated with other staff to ensure cell lines are maintained.

6. Requires cultivation of viral vectors

Lab Functions 1. Successfully completes training and certification by the Department of

Veterinary Medicine to handle and work with live animals, primarily mice, in a safe and

humane manner, following institutional guidelines

for disposal of dead animals, biohazards and used needles.

2. Setting up breedings, weanings, transferring cages between rooms, ear tagging and tail

snipping, and updating lab, breeding and genotyping records.

3. Performs Basic to intermediate techniques in immunological research, including

ELISA, ELISPOT, Immune cell isolation, Flow cytometry, Western Blotting, DNA/RNA

extraction, PCR, SDS-PAGE gels, Cloning.

4. Requires a willingness to learn techniques for handling chemicals

5. Requires the ability to calculate molarity and accurately prepare

media solutions and reagents.

6. Uses acids and polyacrylamide solutions, flammable materials and

other biohazards according to OSHA and institutional safety policies.

7. Discusses goals of projects and strategy for attaining the goals with

supervisor in clear and concise manner.

8. Ensures safe and efficient functioning of the lab and pleasant work

environment for self and others.

9. Responsible for ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies.

10. Develops research protocols.

11. Assists in the design of laboratory experiments and techniques.

12. Instructs other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques and to discuss project

goals and strategies.

Lab Maintenance 1. Responsible for ordering laboratory animals, and maintaining

up-to-date animal inventory.

3. Maintains lab work area and lab equipment, monitoring it daily to

ensure the lab operates safely, is clean, and all equipment is in good

working order; understands correct operation of all lab equipment, and follows written

instructions/operations manuals.

4. Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
